U.S. stocks finished higher on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, as easing Treasury yields and company-specific news helped support the market. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at records, though the gains were modest and the Russell 2000 fell. Reports also cited optimism about AI-related growth and expected corporate earnings, but they do not establish that any one factor caused the rise.

How the major indexes finished

Closing figures reported by the Associated Press show a mixed session across U.S. indexes:

Index October 6 close Change Session result
S&P 500 7,818.93 Up 44.98 points, or 0.6% Record close, topping its prior record from August
Dow Jones Industrial Average 51,521.28 Up 253.38 points, or 0.5% Rose
Nasdaq Composite 27,599.79 Up 122.48 points, or 0.4% Record close, extending the record set the prior day
Russell 2000 2,830.30 Down 16.84 points, or 0.6% Fell

The AP also reported that the S&P 500 was up 23% from its late-March 2026 low. That longer-period advance came amid worries about war, high inflation and pressure in the bond market; it is a reported index move, not evidence that those concerns had gone away.

Why stocks rose while yields were a concern

Easing yields offered some relief

The AP’s end-of-day account said easing bond yields helped stocks. In its earlier premarket report, Reuters said Treasury yields had dipped from multi-year highs, giving investors some relief. The timing matters: Reuters described conditions before the session’s close, while AP identified easing yields as support in its close summary. The reports do not show that yields stopped being a market concern.

AI optimism and earnings expectations supported sentiment

Reuters said optimism about AI and expectations for strong corporate earnings had supported U.S. stocks, with investors looking ahead to the approaching quarterly earnings season. These are expectations and investor positioning—not confirmed future profits or proof that AI alone drove the October 6 advance.

Two company developments drew attention

AP pointed to Constellation Energy’s announcement of a long-term agreement to supply electricity to Google, as well as Lamb Weston’s better-than-expected profit report. The coverage presented both as positive company news that supported the market; it did not quantify their contribution to index moves.

Rank #2

Oil was part of the earlier market backdrop

Reuters reported that oil prices had retreated in its premarket account, another source of relief for investors. AP’s close summary did not identify oil as a primary driver of the day’s finish, so it is best understood as earlier context rather than a confirmed explanation for the closing gains.

What the record close does—and does not—show

A record in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq means those indexes closed above their previous closing levels; it does not mean every part of the market advanced. The Russell 2000’s decline is a clear counterpoint to the gains in the large-cap indexes. The session also unfolded against reported concerns about inflation, geopolitical conflict and bond-market pressure.
