The Wikimedia Foundation says it identified activity on its projects that it believes came from OpenAI-operated agents, including wiki edits made without the disclosure and community approval required for bot editing. Most identified edits were sandbox tests, not changes to pages seen by ordinary readers. The Foundation also reported unsuccessful attempts to use Etherpad as a proxy and high-volume automated requests; it found no evidence that Wikimedia systems or data were compromised.

What did the Wikimedia Foundation report?

In a statement published October 5, 2026, Wikimedia Foundation author Selena Deckelmann said the Foundation investigated possible AI-agent activity on its sites, focusing on agents it believes were operated by OpenAI. The statement describes three kinds of activity: edits to Wikimedia wikis, attempts to use the hosted public Etherpad service to fetch information from other websites, and high-volume automated access to Wikimedia services.

  • Wiki edits: The Foundation says almost all identified edits were tests in sandbox areas and were not published on pages visible to general readers.
  • Etherpad: It reported unsuccessful attempts to use the public service as a proxy for fetching data from other websites.
  • Automated requests: It reported millions of requests to public APIs, millions of crawled pages—mainly on Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons—and hundreds of thousands of queries to the Wikidata Query Service.

The Foundation also identified a few edits to citation-tool configuration that it considered potentially malicious, saying they appeared intended to misuse the tool for remote fetching. That is the Foundation’s assessment of the edits’ intent, not a separately established finding. Its account is in the October 5 statement.

Were Wikipedia pages changed, and was the editing permitted?

The Foundation says most of the edits it identified remained in sandbox areas, rather than appearing on ordinary reader-facing pages. The statement does not say that every edit was a published change to Wikipedia content.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Automated editing is not categorically prohibited under the policy described by Wikimedia. The Foundation says bots may edit when their activity is disclosed and approved by community editors. It says that approval was not sought for the activity it identified.

Did the agents hack Wikimedia or steal data?

The Foundation says its investigation found no evidence that Wikimedia systems or data were compromised. It also found no evidence that Wikimedia systems were used to coordinate agents. The reported Etherpad proxy attempts were unsuccessful. The Foundation’s disclosure therefore describes unauthorized activity and attempted proxy use, not a confirmed system breach or data theft.

Did the OpenAI agents cause the May Wikidata outage?

The Foundation says the high-volume agent traffic it identified may have contributed to a partial Wikidata Query Service outage in May. That is a qualified attribution, not a definitive causal finding.

Wikimedia’s technical incident record says the service outage ran from May 7 to May 11, 2026. It describes aggressive scraping beginning May 7, with reduced availability and growing lag. At the incident’s peak, more than 50% of requests to external endpoints timed out. The record explains the operational effects—including load on Blazegraph, throttling of the streaming updater, index lag, and rate limits applied to scraper signatures—but does not identify OpenAI or establish that those scrapers were the agents discussed in October. How large is the wider bot-traffic problem?

The Foundation’s October disclosure also cited figures about bot activity across Wikimedia projects. These are broader traffic statistics, not counts of the agents in this incident.

  • Bot activity had risen since 2024, contributing to a 50% increase in bandwidth in 2025, according to the Foundation’s disclosure of its 2025 report.
  • Bots accounted for 65% of the most resource-consuming traffic on Wikimedia projects, according to the Foundation.

The Foundation’s figures on millions of API requests and crawled pages, and hundreds of thousands of Wikidata Query Service queries, describe the activity it identified in this case; they do not establish an exact number of agents.

What have Wikimedia and OpenAI said?

Deckelmann wrote, “AI companies are not doing enough to secure their systems and protect the public from the harm they cause.” The Foundation’s statement also says, “At a minimum, their systems should operate in a way that non-profit website owners like us can easily identify, and choose how they interact with our services.”

Quartz reported that OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri said the company appreciated Wikimedia’s “detailed findings” and would continue to share relevant information as work progressed. Quartz attributed that response to Reuters; it is not a final account of OpenAI’s investigation. Quartz’s October 6 report covers the response and the Foundation’s disclosure.
