Researchers have demonstrated a laboratory technique that distinguishes the mirror-image forms of individual amino acids using electrical signals from a gold nanogap. It may eventually inform compact instruments for astrobiology, but no spacecraft-ready sensor or detection of alien life has been demonstrated.
What the new technique detects
The method detects amino acids and distinguishes their two mirror-image forms, known as L and D enantiomers. It does not detect organisms directly. Because the relative abundance of these forms can be relevant to assessing possible biological activity, measuring handedness could contribute to a search for life—but it is only one kind of chemical evidence.
The peer-reviewed study, “Chiral discrimination of amino acids in meteorite and desert soil extracts via single-molecule nanogap conductance,” was published in Nature Communications, volume 17, article 10274, on October 5, 2026. Read the paper.
How the sensor works
The device uses two gold nanowires separated by an adjustable gap. As individual molecules pass through the gap, they affect an electron-tunneling current, producing current-versus-time waveforms. Machine-learning models classify those signals by amino-acid identity and chirality. The authors report that the approach does not require optical measurements or chiral-recognition molecules.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The physical explanation for the differences between waveforms is not settled. The authors say the signals are consistent with temporary interactions between molecules and the junction, while noting that local junction structure, molecular orientation, temporary adsorption or coordination, and electrostatic effects could also influence the measurements. Further experimental and theoretical work is needed.
What the reported accuracy figures mean
The study reports different accuracy figures for distinct tasks. They should not be read as an overall probability of detecting life.

| Study task | Reported result |
|---|---|
| Distinguishing individual L- and D-amino-acid enantiomers | Over 80% accuracy |
| Identifying amino-acid identity and chirality in a blind test of 39 amino acids | Greater than 50% accuracy |
| Quantifying mixtures of four amino acids with different chiral compositions | Greater than 66% accuracy |
These are results reported by the study authors for their respective tests in the 2026 paper; they describe classification or mixture-analysis performance, not life detection.
What the natural-sample tests established
The team analyzed laboratory extracts from the Murchison meteorite and Atacama Desert soil. For a targeted panel of 11 amino acids, the measured compositions captured major features also observed with liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS). The paper also addresses background and low-abundance signals.

This is evidence that the approach can be applied to prepared extracts from chemically complex material. It does not establish how the sensor would perform on an unprepared sample collected on another world, or that an amino-acid pattern proves life. The comparison with LC–MS is limited to the reported sample results; the study does not establish that the nanogap method is generally superior.
Could it fit inside a future spacecraft?
Possibly, as a future application—but the published work does not demonstrate a spacecraft instrument. The study presents a foundation for potential astrobiological use. The available sources do not establish a flight-ready design, mass or power requirements, radiation tolerance, mission selection, or flight qualification. A compact laboratory technique is not automatically a compact, reliable spacecraft payload.

Before such a sensor could support a mission, researchers would need to show that it can operate robustly under relevant conditions and analyze samples in the form a spacecraft could actually collect and prepare. Until then, spacecraft use remains a prospect rather than a current capability.

The result is a new way to electrically analyze amino-acid handedness at the single-molecule level, with tests on meteorite and soil extracts. It could eventually complement other chemical analyses. It is not a standalone life detector, and the reported experiments neither found extraterrestrial life nor show that the instrument is ready to fly.
