NetApp Novus is designed to keep large AI environments supplied with data by separating metadata services from the data path. That lets the two tiers scale independently under one NFS namespace, rather than requiring metadata, throughput, capacity and concurrency to scale as one system. This is NetApp’s architectural approach—not proof that Novus eliminates bottlenecks in every deployment.
Why metadata can become a bottleneck in AI storage
AI workloads can place distinct demands on storage at once. Moving large volumes of training or inference data stresses throughput, while coordinating access to many files and objects can stress metadata services. A design that scales these functions together may constrain expansion when a GPU environment grows.
NetApp says GPUs can fall below 30% utilization when an AI factory cannot deliver data quickly enough. That is the company’s characterization of the problem, not a universal or independently measured utilization rate. The practical point is that storage performance depends on more than headline bandwidth: metadata handling and concurrent access also matter.
How Novus separates metadata from the data path
NetApp announced Novus on September 29, 2026, as a storage architecture for AI factories and large GPU environments. Its core design is a distinct metadata software tier alongside a separate data tier. The shared namespace uses industry-standard NFS, while metadata services, throughput, capacity and concurrency are intended to scale independently. NetApp’s announcement describes the design and its initial configuration.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Initial announced architecture
| Layer | Announced component | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Metadata | Novus Data Director on qualified Supermicro infrastructure | Provides the metadata software tier, separate from the data path. |
| Data | NetApp ONTAP data services on NetApp AFF A90 systems | Provides the data tier under the shared namespace. |
Novus is therefore an architecture spanning a metadata tier and an ONTAP data tier, not simply a new AFF A90 model. NetApp also describes its work with Supermicro on infrastructure for AI factories; the announcement identifies the initial Novus components.
What the scale figures do—and do not—show
NetApp presents Novus as architected to exceed 100 TB/s in aggregate throughput and describes a scale figure of 50K+ GPUs at approximately 2 GB/second. These are vendor design claims and scale framing, not evidence that a customer deployment has achieved those results. The GPU figure should be read as NetApp’s stated architecture scale, not as a guarantee for an arbitrary workload or configuration. NetApp’s Novus product page provides the company’s scale presentation.

NetApp’s announcement also quotes Omdia Chief Analyst Tony Palmer describing modeling that projects the disaggregated architecture could scale to dozens of exabytes of effective capacity and 100 TB/s sequential-read throughput. That is an analyst projection based on observed testing, not a report of an existing production deployment. The announcement does not provide enough test methodology or customer deployment detail to treat these figures as an independently comparable benchmark. The announcement attributes the projection to Omdia.

NetApp said Novus was orderable when it announced the product on September 29, 2026. That statement does not establish present stock, delivery timing, the availability of a particular configuration or pricing. Because this is an enterprise architecture, evaluation should focus on deployment fit and evidence, not just the largest scale number.

- Confirm the qualified Supermicro infrastructure and AFF A90 configuration available for your deployment, along with delivery timing and service terms.
- Ask how metadata, throughput, capacity and concurrency scale in the configuration you are considering, and what operational work is involved in managing the separate tiers.
- Map your workload’s file-access patterns, concurrency and GPU scale to the proposed design; headline throughput alone does not establish fit.
- Request test methodology and results relevant to your workload, and distinguish measured results from architecture targets or analyst projections.
- Compare alternatives on metadata scaling, independent data-path scaling, namespace and protocol support, supported data systems, deployment complexity, availability and cost. The available Novus announcement does not establish a like-for-like independent comparison.
