A Polygon-credited opinion piece argues that the game could move beyond a familiar design pattern: a brief benefit from using a drug followed by a penalty for repeated use. Its reported cocaine mechanic remains unverified in the official PEGI results reviewed, and the argument is about game design—not evidence that gaming has an industry-wide drug problem.
What the headline means—and what it does not
“GTA 6 Could Finally Fix Gaming’s Huge Drug Problem” is an opinion headline, not a finding that games have a measured, industry-wide problem or that GTA 6 has already solved one. The argument, credited to Polygon writer Jen Glennon in a GameSky mirror published October 6, 2026, is that games often make drug use a simple trade: a short-lived advantage followed by a debuff if the player repeats it.
That critique can be assessed as a design question. Does a game treat drug use as a momentary power-up, a meaningful choice with lasting consequences, a story event, or part of a person’s life and circumstances? Those possibilities are not interchangeable, and a more involved mechanic is not automatically a more thoughtful portrayal.
Is the reported GTA 6 cocaine mechanic confirmed?
No. The GameSky mirror says a PEGI listing reportedly described cocaine use at any time and drug-related story scenes. That is attributed reporting, not confirmation from Rockstar or PEGI. The official PEGI search pages reviewed showed older Grand Theft Auto ratings and other games, but did not surface a GTA 6 rating entry verifying the reported details. The absence of an entry in those inspected results does not prove that no listing existed; it means the claim could not be independently verified there.

The report also does not establish that those details will appear in the final game. Until Rockstar or an authoritative rating entry confirms them, the alleged ability to carry and use cocaine should not be described as settled gameplay.
What would make a drug mechanic more consequential?
The article’s argument is most useful as a set of questions for evaluating design, not as a prediction about GTA 6. A mechanic can be mechanically consequential without being humane or realistic; portrayal and consequences need to be considered separately.

- Immediate effect: Is use a temporary boost, a hindrance, a narrative event, or a choice with no mechanical reward?
- Repeated use: Does repetition change the game over time, or does it trigger only a temporary penalty that is easy to remove?
- Duration and reversibility: Are effects fleeting, persistent, or connected to meaningful recovery choices?
- Human context: Does the story give people who use substances social and personal context, or frame drugs and users mainly as obstacles, villains, or punchlines?
These questions do not imply that every game needs a simulation of substance dependence. They help distinguish a consequence that matters to play from a punishment attached to a familiar stereotype. Nor does adding a lasting penalty, by itself, make a depiction responsible: a system can be more severe and still reduce people to a warning or a gameplay problem.
What evidence says about drug portrayals in games
A peer-reviewed analysis hosted by SciELO examined 19 mobile games. In that sample, the authors reported that 68% included illicit drugs, while six games (31%) referred exclusively to legal substances. The sample is small and specific to mobile games; it cannot establish how common these portrayals are across the whole games industry or predict what GTA 6 will contain.

- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
The analysis also describes many games as presenting drugs as obstacles or hostile entities. It says most of the games studied did not encourage empathy with people who use drugs and instead reinforced stigma. That offers a reason to ask who a game humanizes and how it frames substance use—not proof that any particular portrayal causes drug use, addiction, or other real-world behavior. The available extract does not provide the study’s authors’ names or publication year, so those details cannot be reliably supplied here.

Once Rockstar or an authoritative rating source provides verifiable details, readers can separate three questions that the headline blends together:
Rank #4
- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.
- What is actually in the game? Look for confirmed rating information, official descriptions, or other authoritative documentation rather than treating a secondary report as final gameplay.
- What does the system do? Determine whether use has a short-term effect, whether repeated use changes play, and whether consequences last or can be reversed.
- How are people represented? Consider whether the story gives people who use substances agency and context, rather than making them a mechanic, threat, or joke.
Those are separate tests. A rating entry could establish content without showing how the mechanic works, while a consequential mechanic would not, on its own, establish that the story avoids stigma.
