A study published on 5 October 2026 reports evidence for a planet candidate orbiting the hot, young white dwarf HS 0209+0832. Its atmosphere may be losing material that the white dwarf is pulling in, and the unusual elements found there are consistent with the planet having formed from matter expelled when its star died. That would make it a second-generation planet—but the object is a candidate, not a confirmed detection.
What did astronomers detect?
The team identified two clues: an unusual mix of elements in the white dwarf’s atmosphere and a repeating change in the system’s brightness. Together, they support a scenario in which an evaporating giant planet is supplying material to the star. Neither clue, on its own, is a direct image or an unambiguous measurement of a planet.
An unusual chemical fingerprint
The researchers reanalysed ultraviolet spectra of HS 0209+0832, including Hubble observations originally taken in 1999. They found enrichment in trans-iron elements such as zinc, copper and niobium, alongside depletion in elements common in rocky material, including silicon and iron. The paper highlights the strong enrichment of s-process elements—elements made through a particular neutron-capture process in evolved stars—as the key sign that the accreted material may have been processed during the progenitor star’s late life. NASA reports that matching niobium to many previously unidentified features helped make sense of the old Hubble spectra. The study in Nature Astronomy and NASA’s account of the Hubble reanalysis describe the evidence.
A repeating brightness signal
TESS photometry showed a sinusoidal signal with a reported period of 4.399 ± 0.026 days and an amplitude of 0.120% ± 0.018%. Those values describe the signal measured in the TESS data, not a direct measurement of the planet’s size. The study suggests that the variation could come from heat being distributed unevenly across a planet’s day and night sides, or from a transiting tail of material evaporating from a gas giant.

What does “second-generation planet” mean?
A first-generation planet forms from the disk of material left over when its star is born, as the planets in our Solar System did. A second-generation planet would form later, from material expelled during the star’s evolution and death. The proposed origin here is consequential because the chemical pattern in the white dwarf’s atmosphere appears more consistent with stellar-processed material than with ordinary rocky matter.
| Question | First-generation planet | Proposed second-generation planet |
|---|---|---|
| When does it form? | During the system’s original planet-forming era | After the star’s main-sequence lifetime, from expelled stellar material |
| Where does its material come from? | Material left over from the star’s birth | Material ejected during the star’s later evolution |
| What evidence is relevant in this case? | The study does not identify a first-generation planet as the source of the observed material | A distinctive abundance pattern in accreted material, plus a periodic brightness signal; this supports a candidate interpretation, not a confirmed planet detection |
ESA/Hubble describes HS 0209+0832 as the first candidate reported with hallmarks of formation from material related to a star’s death. That is a narrower claim than calling it the first planet ever found around a white dwarf. ESA/Hubble’s announcement uses candidate language, as does the paper.

How could a planet form after its star dies?
The proposed orbit is about 0.04 AU from the white dwarf. NASA summarizes that distance as about 6 million kilometres (3.7 million miles), much closer than Mercury’s orbit around the Sun. At such a separation from a hot, young white dwarf, intense high-energy radiation could heat and strip a planet’s atmosphere. Some escaping material could then fall onto the white dwarf, producing the chemical pollution seen in its atmosphere.
Two formation routes the study considers
- Formation in an ejected-material disk: Material expelled when the star shed its outer layers could form a circumstellar disk. A giant planet might then arise through direct gravitational collapse within that disk.
- A first-generation world with a later atmosphere: A sub-Neptune or super-Earth formed earlier could be scattered inward toward a second-generation disk and acquire an atmosphere made from that newer material. For this route, formation, inward perturbation and orbital circularisation would have to occur within the white dwarf’s roughly 5-million-year cooling age cited by the authors.
These are proposed pathways, not established histories of this particular candidate. The study also considers other explanations for the accreted material and notes that atmospheric mixing and radiative support are not fully understood.

Is this the first confirmed second-generation planet?
No. It is the first reported candidate with the described chemical hallmarks, not an independently confirmed planet. The interpretation combines evidence of accretion and a periodic photometric signal; it does not yet settle whether the source is a planet or which formation pathway produced it. The Nature Astronomy paper is titled “Discovery of a second-generation planet candidate accreting onto a white dwarf,” and both NASA and ESA/Hubble describe the object as suspected or potential.
The result is nevertheless scientifically significant: it suggests that a star’s death may not end the opportunity for planet formation, and that some planetary systems could acquire new worlds from expelled stellar matter. As lead author Jamie Williams told NASA, “Rather than the white dwarf stage being a kind of epilogue to the story of a star and its planets, this research points to the systems we are familiar with only being the first chapter of a potentially much longer tale, with some new characters showing up.” NASA published the remarks on 5 October 2026.

What would strengthen the case?
The study points to searches for enhanced carbon and s-process elements in ultraviolet spectra of hot white dwarfs as a way to find similar systems. Follow-up observations that clarify the source of the periodic signal and the composition of accreted material could help test the planetary interpretation. A larger sample would also be needed before astronomers could estimate how often second-generation planets form; this single candidate does not establish a population or an occurrence rate.
