Use it to find a place to investigate—not to diagnose a memory leak from one large number. The figures describe browser-specific processes or memory metrics, so they are not automatically the same as your computer’s total RAM use.
How to find which tab is using memory
Start with the browser’s own task manager. Sort its entries by memory, then identify whether the largest entry is a page, extension, or browser utility process. That distinction matters: the busiest entry is not always a tab, and the task manager may show more than one kind of memory measurement.
Microsoft Edge

Open Edge’s Browser Task Manager with Shift+Esc. Alternatively, select Settings and more > More tools > Browser Task Manager.

Select the Memory column to sort entries and inspect the highest ones. A page, extension, subframe, or utility process may appear near the top.

Read the metric before interpreting it. Edge’s Memory column represents native memory; JavaScript memory represents the JavaScript heap. The live figure shown in parentheses is memory used by reachable objects. Microsoft’s Edge Developer documentation describes the Browser Task Manager as “a starting point to your memory issue investigation.” Read Microsoft’s explanation of the Edge Browser Task Manager.
A rising live JavaScript-memory figure can mean objects are being created or growing, but that alone does not prove a leak. Microsoft recommends using the task manager to identify a high-resource process and checking whether system load changes after a suspected process is ended. Save work first, and end only a process you recognize: doing so can interrupt the page or browser activity it handles. See Microsoft’s high CPU or memory troubleshooting guidance.

Google Chrome
Chrome shows memory information on tab hover cards when that option is available and enabled. Hover over a tab to compare its displayed memory with other tabs. The exact setting location can vary by operating system and Chrome version. For a fuller process view, use Chrome’s built-in task manager; the Chrome Help page covers its memory display and performance controls. Google Chrome Help: Personalize Chrome performance.
Mozilla Firefox
Firefox’s Task Manager shows whether tabs and extensions are using too many resources. Open it from Firefox’s application menu under More tools > Task Manager (menu wording can vary by version), then compare the listed entries. If you need more specific memory detail, Mozilla points to about:memory. To check whether an extension or theme is contributing, use Troubleshoot Mode. What a high memory number does—and does not—tell you
A task manager is most useful for comparing entries inside the same browser session. The number shown can reflect a browser process, native memory, or a JavaScript heap, depending on the browser and column. Raw figures from different browsers should not be treated as a standardized comparison because the metrics may not measure the same thing.
There is no universal amount of RAM that is “too much” for a tab. A video, interactive web app, or large document may use more resources than a simple page. One high reading is a clue to investigate, not proof that a site is faulty or leaking memory. If you are concerned about a trend, compare the same entry while doing similar work and see whether the value keeps rising.

The browser’s task manager also is not a complete accounting of system memory. If the computer is under memory pressure but the browser’s entries do not explain it, check your operating system’s resource monitor as a separate view.

Identify what the entry is. Note whether it is a tab or site, extension, subframe, or browser utility process. Consider what the page is doing before treating its memory use as unusual.

Check for a trend under comparable activity. If the value keeps rising, note what you were doing and whether the page’s behavior changes. Do not infer a leak from a single reading.

Make one low-risk change. Save your work, then close or reload a page you recognize and check whether the issue returns. If an extension seems responsible, disable extensions and re-enable them one at a time to isolate the cause. Microsoft recommends this approach for Edge troubleshooting.

Use built-in controls for inactive tabs. Chrome Memory Saver can deactivate eligible inactive tabs; a tab may reload when you return to it, and you can add sites you want to keep active. Chrome offers Moderate, Balanced, and Maximum levels. Activity such as audio or video playback, calls, screen sharing, downloads, notifications, partially completed forms, pinned tabs, or connected devices may keep a tab from being deactivated. In Edge, sleeping tabs and performance features can reduce activity from unused tabs. Learn about Edge performance features.

Use Firefox’s diagnostic options when appropriate. Try Troubleshoot Mode to check whether extensions or themes are involved, or inspect
about:memoryfor more detail. Mozilla advises caution with third-party software; a cleanup tool is not required for this diagnosis.Recommended: Crashes or Glitches? After each change, revisit the same entry and compare it under similar conditions. This makes it easier to tell whether the change helped without confusing several possible causes.
