Steam plans to disable its store-domain public review endpoint on October 22, 2026. The replacement is the public WebAPI method IUserReviewsService/GetAppReviews, and Steam says you can retrieve public reviews through it without an API key. An app-associated key is optional; its documented benefit is a higher rate limit. This is a migration, not a URL-only swap: requests, filters, pagination and response parsing change.

What replaces Steam’s appreviews endpoint?

Steamworks Development’s October 2, 2026 announcement names https://api.steampowered.com/IUserReviewsService/GetAppReviews/v1/ as the replacement for the store URL https://store.steampowered.com/appreviews/<appid>?json=1. Steam says the old endpoint will be disabled on October 22, 2026; the announcement does not specify a time zone, so treat the date as the cutoff and plan to migrate before it.

The replacement uses Steam’s WebAPI Service interface. Valve says it should return “basically the same data,” but its documented request and response formats differ. Steam’s stated reason for moving the endpoint off the store domain is to avoid slowdowns when the store is under heavy load and allow more frequent calls; that is Valve’s rationale, not a measured performance guarantee. Can you call GetAppReviews without a key?

Yes. Steam’s method reference says public review retrieval does not require a key. Anonymous requests share a lower rate limit; supplying a WebAPI key associated with the app raises the rate limit. The key is therefore optional for access, but may matter if your workload needs the higher documented tier. Steam does not publish a numeric quota in the reviewed method reference, so do not build capacity plans around a guessed requests-per-minute figure.

Use the documented public host, api.steampowered.com, for this method. Do not confuse it with partner.steam-api.com: Steam describes that as a partner-only host for secure publisher server requests, and it requires a publisher WebAPI key on every request. That host’s authentication rule does not change the public review method’s no-key access. (IUserReviewsService reference; Web API Overview)

What to change in a review scraper or dashboard

1. Change the route and request format

Send a GET request to https://api.steampowered.com/IUserReviewsService/GetAppReviews/v1/. Provide the required appid and pass method arguments using input_json, as Steam specifies for this Service interface. Preserve the filters your application depends on, but translate them to the new method’s documented argument names and enum values.

2. Translate filters instead of copying old strings

The old string-style filter values do not carry over unchanged. Steam maps the old all, recent and updated choices to the new Helpful, Recent and Updated filters. Review-type and purchase-type choices also use the new method’s documented enums. Rename language to languages; the new parameter is a list. The method also documents Funny sorting and filters for dates, playtime, Steam Deck and hardware. Check the current method reference for exact enum spellings and accepted values before changing a production client.

3. Update response parsing

  • Do not look for the old success field; check the HTTP status instead.
  • Remove dependencies on author.num_games_owned, which is no longer returned.
  • Parse weighted_vote_score as a number, not a string.
  • Account for the per-review refunded field and response fields total_matching and day_range_used.

These changes mean a client that only swaps the hostname and path can still fail even if the endpoint is reachable. (IUserReviewsService migration reference)

How to paginate and avoid missing reviews

The documented page size is 20 reviews by default, with a maximum of 100. Use the cursor returned in a response to request the next page. For a job intended to walk through all matching reviews, Steam recommends Recent or Updated filtering: Helpful filtering can widen its actual day range, while Recent or Updated cursor traversal can continue until the method returns an empty result.

Choose the filter based on the job’s purpose. Helpful is appropriate when you want Steam’s helpful-review ordering, but its day-range behavior matters. Recent or Updated is the documented choice for cursor-based traversal. Apply language, review type, purchase type, date, playtime, Steam Deck or hardware filters only when they match the subset you actually need. (IUserReviewsService reference)

Handle throttling and cached anonymous responses

Steam documents HTTP 429 for rate-limited requests and says anonymous responses may be cached for up to 10 minutes. It does not give a numeric quota in the reviewed reference. Build retry and backoff around actual HTTP responses, and monitor status codes and ingestion freshness rather than assuming a fixed call allowance. If the anonymous tier does not suit your operational needs, an app-associated key provides the higher rate limit Steam documents.
