The milestone is for a major fusion-research component—not a finished fusion power plant or commercial electricity generation.
What China completed
The milestone concerns CRAFT’s toroidal-field magnet, a large superconducting component built for fusion research. The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) described it as the world’s largest superconducting magnet for a fusion reactor. That record claim refers to the magnet, not to the size of the entire CRAFT facility or to a completed reactor. CAS’s June 2026 report and ASIPP’s report describe the fabrication and review milestone.
What the toroidal-field magnet does
The TF magnet generates a magnetic field that loops around the plasma chamber, helping confine the extremely hot plasma inside a fusion device. ASIPP and CAS say this field helps constrain plasma and reduce energetic-particle impact or energy loss at the vacuum-chamber wall. The magnet is part of the infrastructure used to study fusion; it does not generate electricity by itself. ASIPP’s technical description explains its role.
Reported size and operating specifications
CAS reports a mass of 582 metric tons and dimensions of 21 m long, 12 m wide, and 3.3 m high. The operating current is 98 kA and the total stored energy is 120 GJ. Its maximum magnetic field is 14.5 T. These are distinct from the reported 6.5 T field at the plasma center, which is generated by 16 TF magnets in the described device. CAS’s specifications give these figures.

The project describes a design requirement for stable, reliable operation over 60 years amid very low temperatures, high current, strong radiation, and high stress. That is an intended operating-life claim, not evidence that the magnet has already operated for 60 years. CAS’s report presents the requirement.
How it compares with ITER
CAS says the CRAFT TF magnet’s volume is 1.3 times that of ITER’s TF magnet and its energy-storage capacity is three times greater. The comparison is limited to those two reported measures; it does not establish that CRAFT is a larger facility, a more advanced reactor, or closer to producing fusion electricity than ITER. The “world’s largest” description is the developers’ characterization reported by CAS. CAS’s comparison supplies the stated basis.

Other CRAFT magnet work reported by ASIPP
ASIPP also reports final acceptance and full-parameter testing for a separate high-temperature superconducting central-solenoid (CS) coil. Its reported stable current is 60 kA, stored energy is 6.03 MJ, and joint resistance is 0.87 nΩ. These measurements concern the CS coil, not the TF magnet. ASIPP further credits the six-year project with 47 authorized patents and 14 industry standards. ASIPP’s report provides these project figures.

Completing fabrication and passing expert review is a significant engineering milestone for a purpose-built fusion-research facility. It does not mean CRAFT is a commercial power plant, that the entire facility is complete, or that fusion electricity is being generated. The reports describe the magnet’s completion and testing, not commercial power production.
