To grow one large blue copper sulfate crystal, use a clean seed crystal suspended in a solution of copper sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4·5H2O). Let the solution cool and the seed grow slowly without disturbance. The seed gives dissolved material a surface to build on; keeping other crystals from forming reduces competition.
What you need
- Copper sulfate pentahydrate crystals, labeled CuSO4·5H2O. This is the blue hydrate used in the cited classroom method.
- Water and a clean glass vessel.
- Fine thread or line to suspend a seed crystal.
- A small, clean, well-formed seed crystal.
- A hot-water bath for dissolving the crystals; do not heat the solution directly.
How to grow a single large crystal
- Prepare the solution. The classroom procedure described by Boward A. Kiver dissolves 100 g of copper sulfate pentahydrate in 200 g of water using a hot-water bath. Treat this as a specific educational recipe, not a guaranteed or universally optimized ratio. Direct heating can cause water loss, and hot solution can cause serious burns. - Let the solution cool. Kiver’s procedure leaves the solution to cool overnight. Cooling can produce crystals; select one clean, well-formed crystal as the seed for the next stage.
- Set up the seed. Tie the seed to fine thread or line and suspend it in the cooled growth solution. Keep it clear of the vessel’s bottom and sides so it has room to grow. The cited classroom method and Penn State’s general crystal-growing guidance both describe suspending a seed. (Oklahoma Academy of Science article; Penn State MRSEC instructions)
- Leave it undisturbed. Keep the vessel and seed clean, and avoid adding stray crystal grains that can become competing nucleation sites. Allow the solution to change slowly and do not move the vessel unnecessarily. MIT’s guidance on crystallization supports slow growth and limiting excess nucleation as general principles; it is not a copper-sulfate-specific controlled home test. (MIT Department of Chemistry)
- Check periodically. If other crystals form, they compete for material with the seed. Exact timing and results vary; the cited sources do not establish a reliable home-growing schedule or a particular vessel, temperature, or evaporation rate.
Why a seed and slow growth help
A seed is an existing crystal surface on which more material can deposit. If many crystals begin growing, the available material is shared among them rather than building on the single crystal you selected. Penn State’s general instructions explain that evaporation can make a solution supersaturated and allow material to deposit on a suspended seed. MIT likewise notes, in its broader crystallization guidance, that fewer nucleation sites and slower growth tend to favor larger crystals. These are useful principles, not a guarantee of a specific size.
What size can you expect?
Kiver’s classroom article reports that its further resupersaturated solution was prepared using 1 g of copper sulfate pentahydrate crystals per 10 g of saturated solution. The article says a suspended small clean seed could produce a crystal “up to approximately 215g in mass.” That is the author’s reported result for the described classroom procedure—not a promised outcome or a typical home result. The article also reports success in more than 80 percent of attempts over the preceding three years; this is a historical classroom report, not an independently verified probability for home growers. - Use a hot-water bath rather than heating copper sulfate solution directly. Hot solution can cause serious burns.
- Keep copper sulfate away from children and pets. Do not ingest it; avoid skin and eye contact.
- Follow the current supplier label and applicable laboratory safety instructions. Disposal requirements vary by jurisdiction, so follow local rules rather than assuming one universal method.
