AI’s cybersecurity impact runs in both directions: it gives defenders new tools, but it also creates models, applications, data flows and identities that need protection. As organizations deploy more AI, they must secure those systems and adapt to attackers who can use AI to increase the speed and scale of their operations. That creates a distinct cybersecurity demand—not proof that every security company will benefit.
How AI creates a cybersecurity opportunity
AI changes cybersecurity in two connected ways. First, AI systems introduce risks that traditional security programs may not fully address. Second, security teams can use AI and automation to support detection, investigation and response. The opportunity is therefore broader than simply buying software that uses AI: organizations also need controls for the AI they build, buy and use.
NIST’s Cybersecurity, Privacy, and AI program describes this two-way relationship. Broad AI adoption can affect existing cybersecurity and privacy risks, while cybersecurity considerations can influence whether and how organizations adopt AI. NIST calls for practices that improve risk management, support responsible use of AI for cyber defense, and help defenders adapt to AI-enabled offensive techniques.
What organizations need to secure in AI systems
AI deployments can expose different assets and functions to attack. NIST’s adversarial machine-learning taxonomy discusses risks such as evasion, model extraction, membership inference and attacks on availability. It also notes that existing frameworks and guidance do not comprehensively cover the complex attack surface of AI systems and other security abuses enabled by them. These are risk classes to assess—not a claim that every AI deployment is vulnerable to every attack.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In practice, security teams may need to understand who can access a model or application, what information it can reach, how AI use is governed, and how requests move between users, models and other systems. Controls should reflect the specific deployment and data involved rather than treating “AI security” as one universal product or setting.
Why demand is showing up in market forecasts
Gartner’s forecasts illustrate why securing AI is attracting attention, but the figures describe different market categories and should not be added together.

| Gartner forecast | 2026 | 2027 | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Market for securing AI | $2.835 billion | $4.783 billion | A defined market including AI application security, AI usage control, AI governance platforms, AI gateways and other securing-AI spending. Gartner estimates a 68.7% increase from 2026 to 2027. |
| Worldwide AI cybersecurity spending | $51.347 billion | $85.997 billion | A broader Gartner category for AI cybersecurity spending; it is not interchangeable with the separately defined market for securing AI. |
Both are Gartner forecasts, not audited totals of realized spending. Gartner’s separate September 2026 forecast also estimates total worldwide AI spending at $2.7 trillion in 2026, a much broader measure. The figures indicate expected demand; they do not establish how much any particular cybersecurity vendor will earn.
Which security categories address AI risks?
Gartner names four categories in its securing-AI market forecast. They address different needs, so organizations should start with the risk they are trying to control rather than assume one category covers all AI security.

| Category | Potential role | Forecast detail |
|---|---|---|
| AI application security | Addresses security risks in AI applications. | Gartner forecasts $851 million in 2027. |
| AI usage control | Helps manage or control how AI is used. | Gartner forecasts $749 million in 2027 and 73% growth from 2026 to 2027. |
| AI governance platforms | Supports governance of AI deployments. | 2027 value not stated in the cited Gartner release. |
| AI gateways | Provides controls around AI traffic or access through gateways. | Gartner forecasts 70.9% growth from 2026 to 2027; 2027 value not stated in the cited release. |
The category values and growth rates are Gartner estimates in its August 2026 forecast. Gartner’s guidance is to combine specialized AI security tools with existing security systems, not treat a new product category as a replacement for foundational controls or a complete security program.
AI can also change the threat landscape
The need for cybersecurity is not only about protecting AI systems. Attackers can use AI to accelerate or scale activity, which puts pressure on defenders to adapt. Microsoft’s 2026 Digital Defense Report says AI is compressing attack timelines, lowering the cost of sophisticated capabilities, and enabling greater speed, scale and autonomy. Microsoft also reports detecting at least 46 million business-contact impersonation attacks over the preceding 12 months. That figure reflects Microsoft’s telemetry and stated observation period, not a global census.

These dynamics do not mean every attack is AI-generated or that AI guarantees attackers an advantage. They do mean security programs must account for faster-moving threats and assess whether their monitoring and response processes can keep pace.

Defenders may use AI and automation in security operations, including detection, investigation and response. NIST identifies responsible AI use for cyber defense as an area of focus. IBM’s 2025 report offers one vendor-published data point: organizations that extensively used AI and automation in security operations had an average breach lifecycle 80 days shorter and average breach costs $1.9 million lower than organizations that did not extensively use them.

Those are associations reported by IBM, not proof that AI alone caused better outcomes. IBM also said its research on AI security, governance and access controls was its first study of those topics, and that organizations reporting AI model or application breaches were a small representation of the researched population. Its figures should be read with those limits in mind.
What reported AI-security incidents reveal
In the same 2025 report, IBM said 13% of organizations in its researched population reported breaches of AI models or applications. Among those reporting such breaches, 97% said they lacked AI access controls; IBM said 60% of the AI-related incidents led to compromised data and 31% to operational disruption. These findings are specific to IBM’s reported study population, not a universal incident rate.
The access-control finding highlights a practical question for organizations adopting AI: are permissions and safeguards keeping pace with deployment? IBM Vice President of Security and Runtime Products Suja Viswesan interpreted the report this way: “The data shows that a gap between AI adoption and oversight already exists, and threat actors are starting to exploit it.” This is IBM’s executive interpretation of its report, rather than a standards finding.
How to evaluate AI-security options
Market growth alone is not a reason to buy a tool. Compare options against the organization’s actual risks, existing systems and ability to verify results.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Match the tool to the problem. Is the priority application security, control of AI use, governance, or gateway and routing controls?
- Check visibility and enforcement. Identify which assets and data the product can see, and whether it can enforce appropriate identity and access controls.
- Test integration fit. Consider how it works with existing identity, endpoint, cloud, data and security-operations systems.
- Ask for evidence in your environment. Assess detection quality, response time, false positives, resilience and operational cost under conditions relevant to your organization.
- Account for operating burden. Include monitoring, human review, data handling, governance and supply-chain exposure in the evaluation.
Demand forecasts support the case that AI security is becoming a more consequential area of cybersecurity. They do not prove that every provider will win, that spending will match forecasts, or that specialized tools will deliver value without sound implementation and oversight.
