Data center careers span construction, engineering, commissioning, facility operations, IT infrastructure, field service and sales—not just traditional IT jobs. The best market for your search depends on whether you want a temporary project role or an ongoing operations job, your specialty, and the openings employers are advertising now.
What kinds of data center jobs are available?
A data center must be designed, built, tested and operated. That lifecycle creates opportunities for people with technical, trade, project-management and commercial backgrounds. Job titles vary by employer, so compare the listed duties and qualifications rather than relying on a title alone.
Design and engineering
Engineering roles can cover electrical and mechanical systems, civil or structural work, fire protection, building controls and automation, networks, and broader mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) design. These positions may focus on a facility’s design, infrastructure or systems integration.
Construction and project delivery
Construction hiring can include construction and project managers, superintendents, planners and schedulers, safety professionals, electricians, plumbers and pipefitters, operating engineers, concrete specialists, ironworkers and truck drivers. These jobs are tied to building or expanding facilities; they are distinct from permanent jobs running an operating site.

Commissioning and testing
Commissioning engineers and specialists test electrical and mechanical systems as a project approaches operation. Their work helps verify that installed systems perform as intended before the facility moves into service.
Facility operations, maintenance and field service
Facility technicians, critical-facilities operations staff, installation and maintenance workers, and field-service professionals support equipment and infrastructure. Because data centers operate continuously, these positions may involve shifts or on-call work; check each listing for its schedule and responsibilities.
IT and network infrastructure
Data centers also hire network engineers and architects, systems and cloud professionals, and IT infrastructure, operations and support staff. In Indeed Hiring Lab’s 2026 analysis of U.S. job postings, half of data-center postings were in IT infrastructure, operations and support, and installation and maintenance combined.
Sales and development
Commercial roles can include strategic sales, sales of mission-critical equipment and site selection. These jobs support the development and supply of data center projects, but they do not fit into one standardized occupation category.

Where are data center jobs concentrated?
There is no single definitive ranking of cities with the most current vacancies. Existing employment, project construction and advertised openings measure different things, and a recruiter roundup is a snapshot rather than a live vacancy count.
Where employment is already concentrated
A U.S. Census Bureau analysis published in January 2025, using employment data through 2023, found California accounted for 17% and Texas for 10% of U.S. data center employment. California, Texas, Florida, New York and Georgia together accounted for more than 40%. In California, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Santa Clara counties made up 60% of state data center employment; in Texas, Travis, Bexar, Collin and Dallas counties represented nearly 75%. These are historical employment shares, not current job-opening rankings. See the Census Bureau’s data center employment analysis.
Markets appearing in recent hiring roundups
A January 2026 Data Center Frontier/Pkaza roundup described hiring activity across a broader set of locations, including Northern Virginia (such as Ashburn and Richmond), Texas (Dallas, Austin, Abilene and West Texas), and Southeast markets including Atlanta, Charlotte and Augusta. It also named Midwest locations such as New Albany, Cedar Rapids and Chicago, parts of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, and Western markets including Phoenix, Denver, Salt Lake City and California. This is recruiter-industry coverage; individual listings may have expired. Check the Data Center Frontier/Pkaza hiring roundup for examples, then confirm whether a role remains open with the employer or recruiter.
Construction activity is another signal of project demand, not a jobs tally. The Associated General Contractors of America reported that Census Bureau data put data-center construction spending at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $59.3 billion in May 2026, up 23% year over year. That figure describes spending, not the number of workers or vacancies. Details are in AGC’s construction-spending update.

What do data center jobs pay?
Compensation depends on occupation, seniority, location, shift and on-call duties, travel, and whether a number is an advertised range or a salary-guide benchmark. Treat broad posting comparisons as market indicators, not as a prediction of an individual offer.
Indeed Hiring Lab’s 2026 U.S. posting analysis found median expected hourly compensation for data-center installation and maintenance postings was 42% higher than for comparable non-data-center postings. Median advertised annual compensation was 12% higher. These are comparisons of job postings, not guaranteed wages or take-home pay. See Indeed Hiring Lab’s data center jobs analysis.
Kelly Digital Infrastructure’s 2026 salary guide covers more than 60 jobs across nine major markets and notes that pay differs by city. One displayed national benchmark for a Power Commissioning Engineer is a $102,000 low, $120,000 median and $199,000 high. It is a guide benchmark, not a universal salary range or a specific employer’s offer. Review the Kelly 2026 data center salary guide and the details of the job listing you are considering.
Can experience from another industry transfer?
Potentially. Data center work draws on skills used in telecom, utilities, construction, skilled trades, engineering, networking and operations. The match depends on the job: electrical experience may be relevant to power or commissioning work, for example, while network experience may fit infrastructure roles. Employers set their own requirements, so transferable experience does not guarantee eligibility or a job.
Do not assume that one short course or credential is required—or sufficient—to enter the field. The sources cited here do not establish universal entry prerequisites or verify that a particular credential leads to hiring. Use the role’s actual qualifications to identify any experience, training or certification the employer requests.
Quick Recap
How to search and compare openings
- Search by role family, not just “data center jobs.” Try titles such as data center technician, critical facilities technician, commissioning engineer, electrical or mechanical project manager, controls or building automation (BAS), network infrastructure and field service. Confirm that the listing’s duties match the work you want.
- Separate project work from operating-site work. Construction and commissioning roles may be tied to a particular build or project phase. Facility operations and maintenance roles support an operating site. Ask about project duration and what happens when the phase ends.
- Compare the working conditions. Check the shift pattern, on-call expectations, travel, precise site location, seniority and experience requirements, and disclosed compensation. Kelly notes that location and availability can affect compensation; Indeed’s figures are posting medians, not individual offers.
- Verify that the vacancy is active. Use employer and recruiter career pages to confirm a listing’s status. Roundups and salary guides can help you identify roles and markets, but do not establish that a particular opening is still available.
- Match your experience to the stated requirements. Highlight relevant trade, utility, telecom, construction, engineering or operations work in terms that connect directly to the duties in the posting.
