A German player reportedly said a secondhand AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D triggered a hardware restriction after installation. Riot anti-cheat lead Phillip Koskinas disputed key parts of the account: he said hardware bans last no more than four months, apply only to the game where cheating was detected, and do not cause Vanguard to denylist every other component in a PC. The individual case and the alleged previous-owner cause have not been independently verified.
What the player reportedly experienced
Dexerto reported that a Reddit user identified as After-Cartoonist-196 posted on the German-language PCBaumeister forum that they bought a used Ryzen 7 5800X3D on September 21, 2026. VALORANT had worked with the player’s previous CPU, the account said, but stopped or closed when launched after the swap.
The player reportedly said Riot support told them the processor’s hardware identifier had been restricted on August 12, 2026, after its previous owner cheated. They also reportedly said support told them that other parts, including the motherboard and storage, were flagged. Those details are the player’s account as relayed by press coverage; the support exchange and explanation have not been independently confirmed.
ComputerBase reported that the processor functioned technically and that the issue arose when VALORANT started. That points to a game-access problem in the account, not evidence that the CPU was physically defective.

How the account compares with Riot’s response
| Question | Player’s reported account | Riot anti-cheat lead’s reported position |
|---|---|---|
| Did the restriction follow the CPU? | The player said the used Ryzen 7 5800X3D had a restricted hardware identifier associated with the previous owner. This has not been independently verified. | Koskinas disputed aspects of the story and said he could not find a support ticket matching the reported details. He did not provide a case-specific review. |
| Were other PC parts flagged? | The player reportedly said support identified the motherboard and storage as flagged too. | Koskinas said Vanguard does not ban “everything else” when it matches one component. |
| How long can a hardware restriction last? | The player’s reported account placed the restriction date at August 12, 2026. | Koskinas said hardware bans last four months maximum. If the reported August 12 start date is accurate, that maximum would point to around mid-December 2026; this is a calendar inference, not a confirmed end date for this player’s restriction. |
| Does it apply to every game? | The account concerned VALORANT; it does not establish the scope of any restriction elsewhere. | Koskinas said hardware bans apply only to the game where cheating was detected. |
ComputerBase reproduced Koskinas’s October 2, 2026 statement: “Hardware bans last 4 months maximum, they apply only to the game cheats were detected in, and we don’t ban "everything else" when we match one component. Support will give you the time remaining on request.” He also reportedly characterized the account as “pretty unlikely.” His comments challenge important parts of the report, but do not establish what happened in the individual case.
Hardware restriction is not the same as a permanent account ban
Riot’s VALORANT support article, dated May 31, 2026, describes Vanguard as “Our anti-cheat and security software that runs perpetually to block cheat software and detect cheat hardware.” The page says cheating with auto-clickers, aimbots, or other unauthorized hardware or software that gives an unfair advantage will result in a permanent account ban.

That is Riot’s general cheating policy, not a confirmation of the secondhand-CPU report. The support article does not explain Vanguard’s precise hardware-identification method or determine whether this player’s CPU, account, or other components were restricted. A permanent account ban for cheating should not be conflated with the temporary hardware restriction discussed in Koskinas’s reported comments.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How common are inherited hardware restrictions?
ComputerBase attributed to Koskinas a count of fewer than a dozen cases in which a hardware restriction affected a new owner through a used component. The report does not specify the period covered or how cases were counted, so the figure is not an incidence rate and cannot show how likely a buyer is to encounter the problem.

The available reporting does not establish a public buyer-facing tool for checking a used CPU’s Vanguard status before purchase. Koskinas’s reported guidance is to ask Riot Support for the remaining time if a player has a hardware ban; the reporting does not provide a pre-purchase lookup procedure.

What to do if VALORANT stops launching after a CPU swap
- Ask Riot Support to clarify the restriction. Include the account and the timing of the hardware change, and ask whether a hardware restriction is active and how much time remains. Koskinas said support can provide the remaining time on request.
- Keep the claim specific. Explain that the game stopped working after a used CPU was installed, but do not assume the previous owner caused a restriction or that other components were added to a denylist; neither point is established for this case.
- Do not treat another 5800X3D as a confirmed fix. The reporting concerns an identifier associated with one previously used unit. It does not say that buying a different Ryzen 7 5800X3D, reinstalling Windows, changing accounts, or running a CPU diagnostic clears or reveals a restriction.
