A Prime Day badge does not prove a price is unusually low. To avoid a bad deal, check the item’s price history, compare the exact model and total cost, and buy only when the offer meets a price you already consider worthwhile. These six checks help separate a genuine bargain from a discount that merely looks impressive.
1. Start with a list of what you already need
Write down planned purchases before browsing. Use the event to check prices on those items rather than treating a sale as a reason to find something new. Planning purchases and avoiding impulse buys are among Kiplinger’s recommendations.
This keeps the comparison focused: you know what product you want and can judge whether its price is attractive without letting a countdown or discount badge set your priorities.
2. How do I check Amazon price history?
On an eligible Amazon product page, look for the Price History feature. Amazon says it provides up to 365 days of pricing insights for hundreds of millions of products; that is Amazon’s description of the feature’s availability, not a guarantee that every item has a complete history. Check the specific listing you are considering. Amazon’s Prime Day page describes the feature.

Consumer Reports also identifies Keepa and CamelCamelCamel as tools for viewing Amazon price history. Their coverage and features can vary, so confirm that the tool tracks the exact listing or product variant you want. Consumer Reports’ Prime Day advice discusses these options.
3. Judge the current price against its history
Look at the price trend, not just the crossed-out reference price or a “deal” label. Consumer Reports warns that a retailer may lower a price before Prime Day and then return it to that same level during the event while presenting it as a discount. A badge by itself cannot show whether today’s price is unusually low.

Price history is a reference, not a promise that an item will get cheaper or that a particular price is the lowest it will reach. Use the past prices to decide whether the current offer fits your own threshold, and avoid treating a claimed percentage off as proof of value.
4. Compare the same product across offers
Compare like with like. A similar-looking product, a different storage size, or a bundle with different accessories can make an apparent price comparison misleading. Check the exact model and configuration, then compare the current total and purchase terms.

- Seller and delivery: Check who is selling the item and when it is expected to arrive.
- Returns: Review the return conditions for the specific offer.
Consumer Reports describes Prime Day discounts across a range of categories, but a category-wide deal roundup is not a substitute for comparing the exact item you intend to buy.
5. Check the listing details and reviews before paying
Open the product details and confirm that the listing matches the item on your shopping list. Read reviews for clues about the specific model or variant, and make sure the reviews apply to the configuration being offered. A fast-moving sale or urgency message is not a reason to skip checking what is actually in the cart.

6. Set a buy price—and walk away if it is not met
Before the event, decide what price would make the purchase worthwhile. Factor in the total shown at checkout, including shipping; if you are considering a membership only to access an offer, include that cost in your decision too. If the price does not meet your threshold, skip it rather than letting the discount claim redefine what counts as savings.

Buy now only if the item is one you planned to purchase, the exact offer checks out, and the current total meets your buy price. If one of those conditions is missing, waiting or walking away is a reasonable choice. No price-history chart can establish that a particular item will become cheaper later.

Event dates are time-sensitive. Consumer Reports reported that Prime Day 2026 ran June 23–26 and that Prime Big Deal Days returned October 6–7, 2026. Those dates are past; check Consumer Reports’ Prime Day coverage and its fall event coverage for that 2026 context.
