William Godfray De Lisle began with a personal engineering project: a rifle designed to fire quietly. That experiment developed into the De Lisle carbine, a British commando weapon built around an integrated suppressor. It was unusually quiet for a military firearm, but the available evidence does not establish it as the quietest ever—and it was never literally silent.
Who was William Godfray De Lisle?
De Lisle was an engineer working at the Air Ministry when, according to Hackaday’s account, he began developing a suppressed rifle as a personal project. The early design was a .22-calibre carbine based on a short-magazine Lee-Enfield Mk III. Hackaday reports that De Lisle used the prototype for small-game hunting.
The project’s defining choice was to design the suppressor into the weapon rather than attach a separate silencer to a conventional rifle. The result would eventually be adapted into a British commando carbine chambered for .45 ACP.
How did the De Lisle carbine develop?
From a .22 prototype to .45 ACP
Hackaday recounts that De Lisle demonstrated the early rifle by firing from London’s Adelphi Building toward the Thames. In the story, passersby did not react to the shots. That is an anecdote, not a controlled acoustic test, and it should not be treated as one.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
According to the same account, a later 9 mm version performed poorly, in part because its ammunition was supersonic. De Lisle then pursued .45 ACP. The National Army Museum’s collection record independently identifies its circa-1943 example as a .45-inch ACP carbine.
A hybrid assembled from familiar designs
The National Army Museum describes its example as converted from a Mk III* Lee-Enfield, with a modified bolt and barrel. The War Heritage Institute gives a more specific account of the combination: Lee-Enfield butt and bolt action, a Thompson barrel, and a Colt 1911 magazine. Its record dates the weapon to 1943 and names Ford Dagenham Company as maker. These descriptions identify the broad components; they do not mean every example had precisely the same configuration.

How did the integrated suppressor work?
De Lisle’s patent, GB 579,168, provides primary-source context for his silencing approach. The specification, applied for in 1943 and accepted on July 25, 1946, describes a tubular casing, an expansion chamber and spaced baffles. These elements provide space and barriers for expanding propellant gases, reducing the report of a shot.
The patent is evidence of De Lisle’s silencer concept, not a complete production manual for every feature of the finished carbine. In particular, it should not be used by itself to infer that every detail of a fielded weapon followed the patent drawings.

Why was it considered unusually quiet?
The combination of an integrated suppressor and .45 ACP ammunition helped make the carbine notably quiet compared with many military firearms. The National Army Museum says its example had a “very effective suppressor” that made it “very quiet to use.” The War Heritage Institute’s collection manager, Arthur Van Rossem, calls it “one of the ‘quietest’ military firearms in history.” Those are descriptions of an exceptional degree of quiet, not claims that the weapon made no sound.
Hackaday reports sound figures of 85.5 dB for the De Lisle, 89.5 dB for a silenced Sten and 125 dB for a Sten. It does not provide test conditions in the account cited here, so the figures are best read as reported comparisons, not a controlled ranking. The same article says the De Lisle’s ammunition choice mattered: supersonic bullets produce a flight noise that a suppressor cannot remove, one reason the reported 9 mm experiment was unsatisfactory.

What range and production figures are documented?
The National Army Museum says the carbine was accurate at ranges up to 250 metres. Hackaday separately reports an effective range of approximately 200 metres. These are different descriptions, from different sources, and should not be treated as interchangeable measurements.
Production figures are also reported by Hackaday rather than corroborated by the museum or patent records cited here: it says a 500-unit contract resulted in 130 examples. The figures help convey the project’s limited scale, but should be understood as secondary-source reporting.

Where did the De Lisle see service?
The National Army Museum records use by British Special Forces during the Second World War and the Malayan Emergency, which it dates to 1948–1957. Hackaday also mentions Burma, Korea and Vietnam, but those additional deployments are not independently confirmed by the museum record cited here.
The carbine’s significance lies in its purpose-built approach: a compact bolt-action weapon whose suppressor was part of the design from the start. De Lisle’s private experiment became a specialized military tool, remembered for remarkable quiet rather than for large-scale production or a proven all-time acoustic record.
