No: the standard Steam for Linux desktop client is not currently supported on ARM hardware. Valve’s Linux client requirements specify 64-bit x86_64/AMD64, and a Valve-associated reply reported on October 4, 2026 said, “Steam for Linux is not currently supported on ARM based hardware (#4061).” That does not mean Steam-related ARM projects do not exist: Valve is developing an ARM-based Steam Frame stack, and an experimental community snap offers another route, but neither establishes general support for installing the ordinary client on ARM Linux computers.
What Valve’s ARM support statement means
The reported reply was posted October 4, 2026, when a Valve-associated account closed a Remote Play issue as a duplicate and pointed to the older issue #4061. The reply’s wording was: “Steam for Linux is not currently supported on ARM based hardware (#4061).” The attribution and quote are documented in secondary coverage; this is a reported support-status reply, not a detailed technical announcement or published roadmap.
Valve’s Steam for Linux README gives the baseline for the standard desktop client: a 64-bit x86_64/AMD64 kernel and CPU, alongside 64-bit and 32-bit graphics-driver and glibc requirements. It also lists 512 MB RAM and 5 GB of storage. Those figures are client requirements, not a promise that every x86_64 system or game will work.
Issue #4061 was opened October 12, 2015, under the title “can’t run on ARM architecture systems.” It remains open and is marked Feature Request and reviewed. The original report concerned missing 32-bit packages during a Steam installation attempt; the issue does not provide a published support roadmap or a fuller explanation of the architecture limitation.

What the October 2026 report tested—and what it did not
The issue that prompted the reported reply concerned Remote Play video decoding on one ARM64 Fedora-based setup. The reporter identified the device as an AYN Odin 3 with a Qualcomm SM8750/CQ8725S platform. They reported that V4L2 hardware decoding worked for HEVC, while AV1 was not offered despite the decoder listing AV1 support. See the issue report.
This is a narrow report about one video-decoding path and configuration. It is not a test of every ARM device, every Steam client function, or every game. In particular, a Remote Play decoding issue should not be treated as a complete compatibility assessment for Steam on ARM.

Why Steam Frame is a different ARM case
Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes Steam Frame as running SteamOS natively on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Arm64 chip, with compatibility layers for other operating systems and architectures. Windows games run through Proton, while FEX translates x86 software—32-bit and 64-bit—to Arm64. Valve’s GDC 2026 slide deck describes expanding Proton for Arm64 so x86 games can run on Steam Frame’s ARM chip.
This is evidence of Valve’s ARM work for Steam Frame and its particular hardware and software stack. It does not mean the ordinary desktop Steam client is generally supported on any ARM Linux computer. Steam Frame’s game-compatibility layers and the standard Linux client’s architecture requirements answer different questions.

Depending on the desk situation, you can choose clamp( fits desks from 1" to 3.1" thick) or grommet mounting(suitable for desks from 0.78" to 3.52" thick).
Can you run Steam on an ARM Linux computer anyway?
An Ubuntu community post describes an arm64 Steam snap that bundles the x86 Steam client with FEX to emulate amd64 and i386. The post labels the project a beta test and explicitly says it “is not officially supported by Valve.” Its author reports early testing on NVIDIA DGX Spark and notes device-specific compatibility. Those reports describe an experimental community effort, not a Valve-supported installation method or a guarantee that a given game or feature will work. Read the Ubuntu community post for its status and device notes.
Launching a client through translation is only one layer of compatibility. The operating system, graphics drivers, game, and any feature such as Remote Play decoding can each have separate requirements. An experimental client launch does not establish that all of those layers work.

Check the game separately from the client
A game’s Linux compatibility is separate from whether the Steam client itself runs on a given CPU architecture. Steam Support recommends filtering the store for SteamOS + Linux titles; see Valve’s instructions for finding Linux-compatible games. That filter helps identify games with Linux compatibility, but it does not override the ARM support status of the standard client.

| Setup | Standard client support on ARM | Translation involved | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Steam for Linux on an x86_64/AMD64 PC | Architecture is listed in Valve’s client requirements | Not required for the client architecture | Valve’s README specifies x86_64/AMD64, plus 32-bit and 64-bit graphics-driver and glibc requirements |
| ARM Linux computer using the community snap | Not generally supported by Valve | FEX is used to emulate amd64 and i386 for the x86 Steam client | Ubuntu post describes a beta, community project that is not officially supported by Valve |
| Steam Frame | Device-specific ARM SteamOS project, not general desktop-client support | FEX translates x86 software to Arm64; Proton supports Windows games | Valve documents this compatibility stack for Steam Frame |
If your priority is a handheld Steam system with a supported x86_64 platform, Valve’s Steam Deck is a separate option; its technical information describes SteamOS as Linux-based. That does not change the support status of the standard client on ARM.
