If a call you wanted never rang, check four places: unknown-caller screening, spam filters, your blocked-number list, and automatic call screening. These controls can silence, screen, or sort calls in different ways—and the right fix depends on your phone, Phone app, software version, and sometimes your carrier.
The title’s “four settings” are best treated as a troubleshooting checklist, not a claim that every phone has the same four switches. Start with the setting that matches what happened to the call.
First, identify what “blocked” means on your phone
A missed ring does not necessarily mean the number is on your block list. A phone may screen a caller before ringing, silence a category of callers, move a call into a separate list, or decline a specifically blocked number. “Unknown,” “private,” “spam,” and “blocked” can refer to different categories.
- The call went to voicemail: unknown-caller screening or a silencing rule may be involved.
- The call is absent from the usual call history: look for a separate Unknown Callers or Spam list.
- The caller was rejected: check your individual blocked-number list.
- The phone screened the call automatically: review call-screening features and their rules.
Check the phone’s call history and filtered lists before changing settings; finding the call there can help identify which control handled it.

1. Check unknown-caller screening
On iPhone
Open Settings > Apps > Phone > Screen Unknown Callers. Apple lists three choices:
- Never: screening is off, and calls from unsaved numbers can ring.
- Ask Reason for Calling: the caller is screened before the phone rings.
- Silence: calls from unsaved numbers go to voicemail.
If you want wanted numbers that are not in Contacts to ring directly, choose Never. Apple documents these behaviors in its iPhone instructions for screening and blocking calls.

On Google Phone
Do not assume that Google Phone’s Block unknown setting silences every number missing from your contacts. Google says it blocks private or unidentified numbers; ordinary numbers that are not saved in Contacts still come through. That distinction matters if the wanted caller is using a visible number. See Google’s instructions for blocking or unblocking a number.
2. Review spam filters and filtered-call lists
On iPhone
The Phone app can separate unknown calls from the main Recents list, and calls identified by the carrier as potential spam or fraud can be silenced and placed in Spam. If the call may have been sorted rather than blocked, check the relevant list in the Phone app. Apple’s call-screening guide describes these options.

On Google Phone
Caller ID and spam protection is separate from Filter spam calls. If a legitimate call is labeled as spam, Google provides a way to mark it Not spam and unblock the number. Use the correction path described in Google’s caller ID and spam protection help.
Google says caller-ID and spam protection may send numbers for calls to or from people outside your contact list to Google to identify a business or determine whether a call is spam; Google says it does not get phone numbers from your Contact list. Consider that privacy detail when deciding whether to enable the feature.

3. Inspect the individual blocked-number list
A number can be blocked directly even when no general screening rule applies. If one specific caller cannot reach you, check the block list and remove the number if it should be allowed.
- iPhone: open Settings > Apps > Phone > Blocked Contacts, then unblock the relevant contact.
- Google Phone: open Phone > More > Settings > Blocked numbers.
- Samsung Galaxy: open Phone > More options > Settings > Block numbers, then remove the number from the list.

4. Check automatic screening and manufacturer or carrier options
Google Call Screen on Pixel
If Call Screen is handling calls automatically, review its settings in the Phone app. Google documents paths including Phone > Settings > Spam and Call Screen and Call Screen > Call Screen > Unknown Call Settings; the available path can differ by device and software version. Google says contacts are not screened and documents automatic screening in English in the United States on Pixel phones running Android 10 or later. See Google’s Call Screen help.
Samsung Smart Call
On supported Galaxy phones, Smart Call can offer blocking choices for spam or scam calls, including all such calls or only high-risk scam calls. Availability depends on the model and carrier, so check the actual Phone app rather than expecting the same option on every Galaxy. Change the narrowest setting that fits the problem
To restore a wanted call without discarding useful protection, match the fix to the call’s treatment:
- Unsaved numbers go straight to voicemail: adjust unknown-caller screening so those calls can ring.
- A call appears in a spam or unknown list: retrieve it there and use the app’s correction option if it was misclassified.
- One known caller cannot get through: remove that number from the individual blocked list.
- An automatic screening feature intervenes: review its rules or turn it off if it is screening the calls you need.
Menu labels and feature availability vary with phone model, software version, Phone app, language, region, and carrier. If the documented path is missing, use the settings search on the phone or check the device maker’s support instructions for that model.
