As of October 7, 2026, Epic Games Store’s Windows listing shows System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster as free, with the displayed offer ending October 8 at 11:00 PM in the store’s local time. Check the live listing for your region and its current claim deadline. This is Nightdive Studios’ 2025 remaster, published by Atari—not the original 1999 release. Epic’s listing also advertises optimized controller support.
Can you play System Shock 2 with a controller?
Yes. The 25th Anniversary Remaster supports a gamepad on Windows, and Nightdive describes controls designed specifically for controller use. That makes a controller a genuine option, not a stated requirement. Whether it feels better than a mouse and keyboard depends on what you value: the remaster adds ways to navigate interfaces and reach quick-access controls, while aiming precision and personal preference still matter.
What changed in the remaster’s controller controls?
In a March 20, 2025 interview with Xbox Wire, Nightdive explained that the remaster adapts more than basic movement and combat for a gamepad:
- PDA and hacking: Directional-pad and face-button navigation lets players move through PDA screens and hacking tools.
- Interface access: Triggers cycle PDA interfaces; bumpers switch tabs and quickbars.
- Aiming and leaning: Aim slowing offers an adjustment for accuracy, and a single lean toggle uses the control stick to choose the lean direction.
- Remapping: Nearly every control can be remapped, with analog-stick looking and walking as the exceptions Nightdive specifies.
These are developer-described features, not the results of a comparative performance test. Nightdive’s explanation is in Xbox Wire’s interview about the remaster.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How does that compare with the original PC controls?
The original game’s manual presents a keyboard-driven setup, with separate keys for functions such as the map, inventory, quicksave, and weapon selection. Nightdive has also said the original game and engine were designed for late-1990s PCs with mouse and keyboard. The remaster’s gamepad-specific navigation is a meaningful change in how those systems can be accessed; it does not establish that a controller is better for every player or that mouse and keyboard are inferior.
Which input method should you choose?
| Consideration | Controller | Mouse and keyboard |
|---|---|---|
| Interface navigation | Nightdive describes D-pad and face-button navigation for PDA screens and hacking tools. | The original manual documents keyboard commands for interfaces such as the map and inventory; that manual describes the original game, not the remaster’s current bindings. |
| Quick access | Nightdive says bumpers switch tabs and quickbars, and triggers cycle PDA interfaces. | The original manual lists separate keys for weapon selection and other functions; it does not establish the remaster’s current keyboard bindings. |
| Aiming | The remaster includes an aim-slowing option, according to Nightdive. | The cited sources provide no controlled comparison of aiming precision or performance. |
| Customization | Nightdive says nearly every control can be remapped, except analog-stick looking and walking. | The cited sources do not establish the remaster’s current keyboard remapping options. |
| Best fit | Worth trying if you prefer gamepad input or want its dedicated interface controls. | A natural choice if you prefer the mouse-and-keyboard style the original PC game was designed around. |
No particular controller model is established as required or tested here. The cited developer interviews do not provide a controlled input-method comparison, so choose based on your preference and the controls you find comfortable.
