Before you throw away an unfamiliar gadget or cable, take a photo and search it with Google Lens. A visual match can point you toward a brand, product page, or model number—but it is only a lead. Check the item’s own markings and manufacturer documentation before buying a replacement, selling it, or deciding it has no further use.
How to identify an old gadget or cable with Google Lens
- Photograph the whole item. Use Lens on the live camera view, a saved image, or a screenshot. Frame the gadget or cable clearly so its overall shape and connector ends are visible. If the result is vague, take a separate close-up of the logo, label, connector, or model text. Google Lens can search what a camera sees as well as images you already have.
- Look for text or a barcode. Lens can copy text from an image. If you can read a brand or model number, search that text directly; a barcode may also lead to product information. Android’s Google-published guide gives identifying an appliance model number to find manuals or support as an example.
- Verify the likely match. Compare the candidate’s model number, label, and connector shape with the item itself and the manufacturer’s documentation. A similar-looking result does not establish the exact model, compatibility, electrical capability, or safety. Google does not publish an accuracy guarantee for identifying old cables or gadgets with Lens.
What to do once you know what it is
Identification gives you better options than guessing. If the item works, you might keep it, reuse it, sell it, or donate it. If it is unwanted, look up recycling guidance for your location and check which items the program currently accepts; collection rules and local coverage differ.
For chargers, power supplies, and cables
Google’s recycling program in the United States lists chargers, power supplies, and cables among accepted accessories, subject to its current accepted-items list. Its page explains available mail-in or drop-off options; confirm eligibility and coverage before sending or taking an item. Google Store Help: recycling program in the United States.
For devices that hold personal data
Before recycling a data-bearing device, clear personal data and perform a factory reset. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific device; Google’s recycling guidance also recommends resetting and clearing data.

Why a quick scan is worth doing
A photo search can turn an unknown object into a useful search lead: a model number may take you to a manual, while a brand or barcode can surface product information. Google reported nearly 20 billion visual searches per month in an October 3, 2024 post, and said 20 percent of Google Lens searches were shopping-related. Those are company-reported figures from that date, not independent measurements or a current guarantee of results for any particular item. Google’s October 3, 2024 post.
The important distinction is between recognizing a plausible match and confirming what an item can do. Lens can help you find clues; the printed model information and manufacturer documentation are what to use when making a compatibility or safety decision.
