Jagex apologized after viewers spotted apparent AI-like artifacts in a RuneScape 3 Dragon Slayer II trailer shown at RuneFest. The company said it removed the video while investigating and that an external production partner had explicitly assured it generative AI would not be used.
Why did Jagex take down the RuneFest trailer?
The trailer promoted the RuneScape 3 quest Dragon Slayer II. After its RuneFest debut, viewers highlighted visual anomalies they said looked like generative-AI errors, including a character with an apparent sixth finger and an odd sneaker-like sole on armored footwear. Jagex said it took the trailer down while it investigated. These are observations reported about the video, not an independent forensic finding about how it was made.
What did Jagex say about AI use?
Jagex said the trailer had been produced by a trusted external partner that explicitly confirmed GenAI would not be used. The partner was not named in the cited statement, and the available account reports Jagex’s description of the assurance rather than an independent statement from the partner.
Jagex social media manager Alec “Mod Sween” Sween acknowledged the visible concern in the company’s statement: “But, among other things, there’s a sixth finger and, well, that’s pretty hard to explain away. For that we apologise.”

The statement reported that Jagex was investigating; it did not publish a final finding confirming whether generative AI was used to make the trailer. Jagex also said it does not use GenAI to create its games, artwork, or creative assets, and would not knowingly allow it to be used on its behalf.
What changes did Jagex promise?
Jagex said the incident exposed a weakness in its own processes. It announced an overhaul of its review processes and said it would work with and commission community creators to retell the Dragon Slayer II story. In the statement delivered by Sween, the company said: “Immediately following RuneFest we’re overhauling our review processes, and we’re going to work with and commission creators from the community to make sure that the story of Dragon Slayer II is told to the standard befitting of such an update.”
