Multiple game teams are reportedly interested in a bespoke technique The Coalition developed for Gears of War: E-Day on Xbox Series S: keeping selected, inactive data on the SSD and moving it into system memory when needed. The approach is intended to ease pressure on the console’s limited memory, but it is not a general Xbox feature or a confirmed solution adopted by other studios.

How the SSD-backed memory technique works

Pure Xbox’s 2026 report, relaying Digital Foundry, describes the method as a selective extra tier for game data. Data that is not currently needed can remain on the console’s SSD; when the game needs it, the data is moved into system RAM. Digital Foundry compared the design to paged virtual memory, with an important distinction: the developers choose which subsets are suitable to store this way.

That does not mean the SSD simply becomes RAM. Storage access and system memory serve different roles, and the reported design depends on selecting and tuning data that can tolerate being fetched from storage. Digital Foundry’s explanation, as quoted by Pure Xbox, says the system supplements Series S memory through a bespoke implementation built with Xbox’s platform team and Advanced Technology Group. The report says the game’s environmental density would not have been possible on Series S without it.

What the reported figures mean

Pure Xbox’s 2026 account says Xbox Series S has 10GB of GDDR6. It relays Digital Foundry’s estimate that using a couple of gigabytes of SSD storage can yield about one gigabyte of additional usable system memory.

10GB of GDDR6 Series S memory figure reported by Pure Xbox in 2026, relaying Digital Foundry.
A couple of gigabytes of SSD storage for about one gigabyte of additional usable system memory Approximate trade-off reported by Pure Xbox in 2026, quoting Digital Foundry; not a precise benchmark.
60FPS gameplay target The Coalition’s reported target for Gears of War: E-Day, not a verified frame-rate result or guarantee.

The memory gain comes with costs and limits. The game must reserve SSD space for the selected data, and the report says overusing the technique can reduce performance. It provides no quantified penalty or detailed testing method, so the size of that downside cannot be stated more precisely.

What it means for Gears of War: E-Day

According to the Pure Xbox report, The Coalition kept a 60FPS gameplay target and removed Lumen reflections as the major feature concession on Series S. The target is not evidence that the game has achieved or will consistently deliver 60 frames per second. The reported example instead illustrates a development trade-off: the team used selective SSD-backed data alongside a visual feature reduction to address the console’s constraints.

Are other Xbox teams using it?

Pure Xbox says other game teams are interested, but does not identify them. The available report does not confirm that any other team has implemented the technique, that it is available in an SDK, or that it can be transferred to other games without substantial adaptation. The evidence concerns a bespoke system for Gears of War: E-Day, developed with Xbox’s platform team and Advanced Technology Group.

Is this a consumer upgrade for Series S owners?

No. This is a game-development implementation, not a setting or upgrade that players can enable. The report describes developers managing selected game data across SSD storage and RAM; it does not recommend a particular SSD or say that adding storage to a retail console reproduces the memory benefit.
