Its launch gives businesses another potential option alongside closed services such as ChatGPT and Claude—but the announcement does not establish that Beam matches those products, or that companies are switching to it.
As of Reflection’s October 5, 2026 announcement, Beam was still in final red-teaming and evaluation. The company said it planned to release the model weights and supporting tools later in October; that was a stated plan, not confirmation of a public release. Reflection’s announcement is the primary source for the launch details.
What is Reflection AI?
Reflection AI is a U.S. startup building open-weight artificial intelligence models and an enterprise AI stack. Its stated aim is to offer an American-developed alternative in a field where, according to cofounder and CEO Misha Laskin, leading open models had been coming from China. That is the company’s competitive argument, not evidence that a model’s country of origin determines its safety or quality. Gizmodo’s October 5, 2026 report covered Laskin’s comments and the company’s positioning.
Reflection frames open models as a way to broaden competition and give users and developers more control. In a 2025 blog post, it argued that capable open models could keep the “foundation of intelligence” accessible rather than concentrated among a few providers. That is an expression of the company’s vision, not an independently established outcome.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What is Beam?
Beam is Reflection’s first open-weight model. The company describes it as a sparse mixture-of-experts model with 501 billion total parameters and 23 billion active parameters, designed for coding, reasoning, and agentic workloads. Those figures and capability descriptions come from Reflection; they should not be treated as independent proof that Beam performs well on any particular task. Reflection’s launch post and Axios’s October 6, 2026 report describe the model.
Reflection also reported training details of 23.8 trillion tokens and more than 100 million reinforcement-learning rollouts. These are company-reported scale figures, not evidence by themselves of accuracy, reliability, or an advantage over competing models.
What “open-weight” means here
Open weights let users access a model’s trained parameters, which can support customization and deployment choices unavailable with a conventional hosted-only service. The term does not automatically mean that training data, every model component, or all software is open source. Reflection said it planned to release Beam’s weights under the Apache 2.0 license along with documentation and tools for running, evaluating, and fine-tuning it. The announcement does not establish that every part of the system or training process would be open.

Is Beam publicly available?
At announcement, Reflection said Beam was undergoing final red-teaming and evaluations, with an early preview available to a select group. The company planned a broader release of weights and supporting materials later in October 2026. Treat that as the company’s announced schedule: the October 5 post does not confirm that public access has since begun.

Why might Beam matter to OpenAI and Anthropic?
Reflection is competing for enterprise customers who may want to customize models, control where they run, or manage the cost of AI use. That could make Beam and its accompanying stack an alternative to relying entirely on closed APIs or subscriptions. It is a potential competitive pressure, not evidence of lost customers or a coming wave of switches.
The stakes are meaningful because enterprise business is important to both established providers. Gizmodo reported that OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar told investors in August 2026 that the majority of OpenAI’s revenue was then enterprise, citing CNBC. Gizmodo also reported that Anthropic said in February 2026 that more than 500 business customers each spent over $1 million annually on API usage or Claude subscriptions, again citing CNBC. These are reported company statements, not audited financial disclosures established by the cited coverage. Gizmodo’s report provides the context.

What does Reflection offer businesses?
Reflection describes its enterprise stack as including open-weight models, software, API access, and deployment options that span private cloud, on-premises, air-gapped, and edge environments. The company’s product and pre-launch coverage describes those options. They could matter to organizations with specific infrastructure or data-location requirements, but vendor descriptions alone do not prove readiness for every enterprise, lower total cost, or stronger security than alternatives.
For a business, the decision is not simply “open model or closed model.” Compare each candidate on the work it must actually do and the full burden of operating it:
- Task performance: Test the model on representative company workloads rather than inferring capability from parameter counts or training scale.
- Total cost: Account for inference, hosting, hardware, engineering, maintenance, and any API or subscription charges. An open-weight license does not make deployment free.
- Customization: Determine whether the organization needs to adjust weights or whether prompting and hosted configuration are sufficient.
- Data control: Confirm where prompts, outputs, logs, and model artifacts are processed and stored under the chosen deployment.
- Operational work: Consider who will host, update, monitor, secure, and troubleshoot the system.
- Safety and governance: Evaluate access controls, testing, oversight, and policies for the actual deployment—not just the model’s origin or license.
The available launch coverage does not provide a complete independent, apples-to-apples performance or cost comparison between Beam, ChatGPT, Claude, and Chinese open-weight models.

Are open-weight models safer for company data?
Not automatically. Open weights and options such as on-premises or air-gapped deployment can give an organization more control over where a model runs and how it is integrated. But the organization still needs to assess its configuration, data flows, access controls, monitoring, and operational security. A U.S. developer, an open license, or local hosting does not by itself prove a deployment is safe; likewise, country of origin alone does not establish that a model is unsafe.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can Beam replace ChatGPT or Claude?
That depends on a company’s specific workload, infrastructure, and tolerance for operating its own model stack. Beam could be worth evaluating for organizations that want weight-level customization or deployment flexibility, if and when the announced release is available. Businesses that value a managed service may prefer a hosted product. The evidence available at Beam’s launch does not show that it outperforms frontier models or that OpenAI or Anthropic customers are switching at scale.
Why is China part of the story?
The comparison is about competition in open-weight AI. Gizmodo’s report and Axios’s coverage describe Reflection as seeking to build a U.S. alternative to Chinese-developed open models. Laskin said in a July 2026 CNBC interview that leading open models were coming from China and argued for a stronger U.S. open-model ecosystem. That reflects Reflection’s view of the market and its motivation; it should not be read as a general security verdict on models from any country.

Some U.S. companies may be cautious about placing sensitive information with Chinese developers, while open-weight models may appeal because they can be customized and deployed in different environments. Those considerations can shape procurement, but they do not replace an assessment of a particular model, vendor, deployment, and data-handling arrangement.
What is established—and what remains uncertain?
Reflection has announced a model, described its intended workloads and architecture, and stated a plan to release weights and tools. The announcement establishes a new entrant and a potential enterprise choice; it does not establish independent benchmark performance, public availability after the announced preview, or commercial adoption at scale. Companies considering Beam should verify its current release status and evaluate it against their own requirements.
