Five extinct birds on display at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History tell different stories of loss: Bachman’s warbler, the heath hen, the Kauai oo, the Carolina parakeet and the passenger pigeon. Their declines involved hunting, habitat destruction, disease, invasive predators and trade. Together, their histories show how human pressures can push populations past recovery—and why timely, sustained conservation can still change the outcome for other species.

Why these five birds matter

The Smithsonian exhibition From These Lands: Sharing Our Natural and Cultural Heritage brings together more than 600 natural-history objects from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and five U.S. territories, according to its 2026 description. Among them are specimens of five birds that no longer exist.

A preserved specimen is more than a record of what a bird looked like. Researchers can use specimens for anatomical measurements, genomic work and stable-isotope analysis. Isotopes retained in feathers, for example, can offer clues about diet, migration and past environmental conditions. As ecological modeler Rob Cooke put it, “Museum specimens of extinct species act as a window into the past, showing us both what has been lost and what is still worth protecting.”

How each species disappeared

Bachman’s warbler: a disappearance with unanswered questions

Bachman’s warbler is a reminder that extinction does not always leave a clear final chapter. The last specimen cited in Smithsonian Magazine’s account was collected in Mississippi in 1949. The last confirmed sightings came near Charleston, South Carolina, between 1958 and 1961. In 2002, searchers spent 166 hours covering 3,900 acres in Congaree National Park without finding the bird. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service declared the species extinct in 2023.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The precise cause of its extinction remains uncertain. Destruction of habitat on both its breeding and wintering grounds likely contributed, but the available evidence does not establish a single definitive cause.

Heath hen: the danger of a last, isolated refuge

The heath hen was a subspecies of greater prairie-chicken. Hunting reduced its numbers until the last population remained on Martha’s Vineyard. That refuge did not guarantee survival: fire, a severe winter, predators and disease all contributed to the loss of the remaining birds. A population confined to one place can be especially vulnerable when several threats strike in succession.

Kauai oo: habitat loss, disease and invasive predators

The Kauai oo was one of five extinct Hawaiian honeyeater species described in Smithsonian Magazine’s account. Habitat destruction, mosquito-borne disease and invasive mammal predators all contributed to its disappearance. The loss is also remembered in the changed soundscape of the island’s forests. National Museum of Natural History bird collection manager Chris Milensky said, “The local people there talk about that a lot, how the forests have gone silent without the songs of the Kauai oo.”

Carolina parakeet: multiple pressures on a native parrot

The Carolina parakeet faced deforestation, hunting, disease and capture for the pet trade. The combination matters: a species need not have one decisive threat if multiple pressures reduce its numbers and the places it can live.

Passenger pigeon: abundance was no protection

The passenger pigeon was once extraordinarily abundant, but intense hunting and habitat destruction drove it toward extinction. Attempts to breed the dwindling survivors in captivity came too late. The last male died at the Cincinnati Zoo in 1910. Martha, the last known passenger pigeon, died there in 1914; she was the only one alive during the final four years of her life.

What the losses say about extinction today

The scale of bird extinction is larger than the handful of famous cases suggests. A 2023 study by Rob Cooke and coauthors estimated that at least 1,300 to 1,500 bird species went extinct over the past 130,000 years—about twice earlier estimates. The study combined documented extinctions with modeled estimates based on the fossil record. It also estimated that about 90 percent of bird extinctions occurred on islands, where small, isolated populations can be particularly exposed to introduced predators and other disruptions.

Current indicators point to continuing pressure. Smithsonian Magazine reported in 2026 that BirdLife International found 45 percent of migratory bird species worldwide were in decline and one in nine were threatened with extinction. An Audubon assessment cited in the same coverage found that two-thirds of North American bird species face rising risk from climate-driven habitat shifts. These are broad assessments, not forecasts that every species will follow the same path.

The underlying lesson is not that every loss can be reversed, but that waiting for a population to become critically small leaves fewer options. Habitat protection, limiting hunting and trade, controlling invasive predators and addressing disease risks can matter before a species reaches its last refuge.

How a conservation effort can change the ending

The passenger pigeon shows the cost of acting too late: by the time people tried to breed the remaining birds in captivity, the population had already collapsed. The Guam rail offers a contrasting case. After being classified as “extinct in the wild” for 40 years, it returned to wild populations through captive breeding and reintroduction on nearby islands without snakes. Smithsonian Magazine reports that those populations became self-sustaining.

The Guam rail is not a direct parallel to the five extinct birds: it demonstrates recovery from extinction in the wild, not restoration of a species after its last individual has died. Its return nonetheless shows what coordinated intervention can accomplish when birds remain available for breeding and suitable habitat can be secured. Museum curator Torben Rick summarized the possibility: “With the proper intervention, with the focus, with the science that we do and the specimens that we have here at the museum, these are things that we can really change.”
