Agentic AI relies on more than GPUs: CPUs run sandboxes, execute tools and code, manage reinforcement-learning environments, and move data around model work. NVIDIA designed its Vera CPU for this kind of workload, and CoreWeave announced on September 30, 2026, that it plans to offer Vera compute. There is an important availability caveat: CoreWeave’s announcement describes the planned service, while its CPU Compute page still lists Vera as “coming soon.”

Why do AI agents need CPUs?

An agent may repeatedly reason with a model, take an action, observe the result, and decide what to do next. That loop creates CPU work around the model itself: starting isolated execution environments, calling tools, running code, managing reinforcement-learning (RL) environments, and feeding data through pipelines. GPUs can handle model training and reasoning, but they do not eliminate that surrounding execution and orchestration.

CoreWeave describes the cycle as run, observe, curate, improve, and evaluate. It says demand for supporting CPU capacity can be bursty: a workload might need thousands of environments for an hour, then little capacity until the next run. That is the provider’s workload characterization, not an independent measurement of how all agent systems behave.

What is NVIDIA Vera?

Vera is NVIDIA’s custom CPU, built around its 88-core Olympus design and positioned for agentic AI workloads. NVIDIA says it offers up to 1.2 TB/s of memory bandwidth and up to 1.8 times faster per-core performance on those workloads. These are NVIDIA’s specifications and performance claims; they do not establish a general end-to-end improvement in agent throughput or cost.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

NVIDIA’s technical explanation highlights features intended for software with frequent branches and demanding memory access, including branch prediction, instruction scheduling, and a coherency fabric. Those design choices address aspects of CPU-intensive work, but a system’s real-world performance will also depend on its software, workload, configuration, and operating costs.

NVIDIA announced Vera on March 16, 2026, and named CoreWeave among the cloud providers collaborating to deploy it. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang framed the shift this way: “The CPU is no longer simply supporting the model; it’s driving it.” That is NVIDIA’s strategic view of agentic infrastructure, not a neutral industry finding.

What CoreWeave announced—and what is available

CoreWeave said on September 30, 2026, that it would expand its compute portfolio with NVIDIA Vera. The company says Vera will run bare metal and be integrated with the same platform, consumption models, and economics as the rest of its fleet. It also says Vera will work with CoreWeave Sandboxes.

Those plans should not be confused with confirmed general availability. CoreWeave’s CPU Compute page describes its current bare-metal fleet as AMD EPYC and Intel Xeon, and labels NVIDIA Vera “coming soon.” The materials do not establish a Vera launch date, customer access, or pricing.

CoreWeave’s rack-scale figures

For its planned configuration, CoreWeave describes a rack with 128 Vera CPUs and 11,264 cores, alongside BlueField-4 DPUs and Spectrum-X Ethernet switching. It says the rack can support more than 11,000 concurrent environments. These are CoreWeave’s reported configuration figures, not an independently validated measure of customer capacity.

CoreWeave also reports that, in its own testing, agent sandbox startup was more than three times faster on Vera than on an x86 CPU. The announcement excerpt does not provide enough test methodology to generalize that comparison to other configurations or workloads. Startup speed is also not the same as sustained performance per sandbox, total agent throughput, or cost.

How Vera is intended to address the CPU bottleneck

The proposed approach combines a CPU designed for branch-heavy, memory-sensitive work with cloud infrastructure intended to supply many isolated environments. In CoreWeave’s framing, faster sandbox startup and the ability to run environments concurrently could help with agent execution and RL workloads that repeatedly create or manage compute environments. Whether those advantages translate into better results for a particular deployment will depend on the workload and the implementation.

CoreWeave’s CPU Compute offering describes a mix of capacity types: committed capacity for a baseline, serverless capacity for spikes, and spot capacity for interruptible work. That is the company’s service model, not an independent comparison of cloud economics. For a bursty workload, the practical question is whether the chosen capacity and isolation model match demand without making idle or interrupted work too costly.

What the performance claims do—and do not—show

The announced figures concern different things and come from the companies selling or deploying the technology:

Claim What it describes Source and qualification
88 cores; up to 1.2 TB/s memory bandwidth; up to 1.8× faster per-core performance NVIDIA Vera CPU design and performance on agentic AI workloads NVIDIA, 2026; vendor-reported specifications and comparison.
128 Vera CPUs and 11,264 cores; more than 11,000 concurrent environments CoreWeave’s described rack-scale configuration CoreWeave, 2026; provider-reported configuration and capacity.
More than 3× faster sandbox startup than an x86 CPU Agent sandbox startup in CoreWeave’s testing CoreWeave, 2026; test methodology is not provided in the announcement excerpt.

These claims are not independent benchmarks establishing generalized customer gains. NVIDIA has separately reported a Cognition inference benchmark involving Vera Rubin NVL72 and GB200 NVL72, but that is a comparison of GPU systems—not evidence of Vera CPU performance.

What to evaluate before choosing agent CPU infrastructure

A CPU specification or startup benchmark alone cannot determine whether a platform will improve an agent workload. A useful comparison should include:

  • Workload fit: distinguish agent execution and tool use from RL rollouts, data processing, or model training and inference.
  • Software compatibility: confirm that runtimes, libraries, and code run correctly on the chosen architecture.
  • Memory behavior: examine bandwidth and latency under the workload, not just the advertised maximum.
  • Environment performance: measure concurrent isolated environments, startup time, and sustained work per sandbox.
  • End-to-end results: test the whole agent loop with disclosed methods, including orchestration and data pipelines.
  • Availability and economics: verify access, capacity terms, power use, and total cost for the actual operating pattern.
  • Operational integration: account for deployment, observability, security, and how CPU resources work with the rest of the platform.

The reviewed materials do not provide a neutral, cross-vendor test covering these factors. CoreWeave executive vice president of product and engineering Chen Goldberg said, “General-purpose infrastructure bottlenecks agentic AI; Vera is the first CPU explicitly designed to accelerate it.” That is CoreWeave’s characterization of the problem and product, rather than an independently established industry finding.
