You can make Gemini’s replies feel more like Google Assistant by setting persistent instructions for its tone and format. Those instructions won’t give Gemini new device controls or restore every Assistant feature: supported Android actions, connected apps, and routines determine what it can do. Here’s how to set expectations and choose the right tool for the job.
Set instructions for Gemini’s responses
Instructions for Gemini let you specify preferences that apply across chats, such as answering concisely, leading with the result, or using numbered steps for complicated tasks. Google documents the feature for personal Google Accounts; it is unavailable for work, school, and supervised accounts. Availability also varies by platform and feature: Google lists the Gemini mobile app, gemini.google.com, Gemini in Chrome in supported countries, and smartwatch availability, while noting that some features, including Gems, do not use these instructions. - Open Gemini settings and help.
- Go to Personal Intelligence > Instructions for Gemini.
- Add an instruction, or edit or delete an existing one. Use the available control to turn the feature on or off.
Google’s documented path and labels may vary as the product changes. If the menu is not available, check that you are signed in with a personal Google Account and that the feature is supported in your app or region.
Example instruction
You could adapt this wording to your preferences:
Use a concise, friendly voice. Lead with the action or answer. For simple requests, answer directly; for multi-step requests, give numbered steps. When I ask for a reminder, message, or device action, tell me clearly whether you can perform it and ask for missing details.

This is a suggested prompt, not a Google template. It can influence how Gemini responds and how clearly it communicates limits, but it cannot add integrations or guarantee that an action will succeed.
Instructions change how Gemini answers, not what it can control
A style instruction can make replies more consistent or conversational. It does not, by itself, enable timers, messages, smart-home controls, or routines. Whether Gemini can carry out a request depends on its supported features, connected apps, device settings, and the specific action.

On Android, Gemini supports “Hey Google” in supported contexts, screen-related questions, and some quick voice actions, such as sending a message or turning on lights. Google cautions that some familiar Assistant features may not be supported; availability can vary by country, language, and account type. Google Assistant also helps power some familiar quick voice actions depending on settings. Google’s guide to the Gemini mobile app describes current capabilities and limits. As Google puts it, “Gemini is still learning, so it might not always be able to help.”
If a feature you rely on is unavailable in Gemini, Google says you can switch back to Google Assistant on Android. That is a more appropriate fallback for an unsupported action than trying to solve it with a longer instruction.

Choose between instructions, a Gem, and a routine

Google also documents starting some routines by voice or typed commands when Google Home is connected to Gemini Apps. Some routine starters and actions are unsupported, including multi-step actions that require back-and-forth clarification. Check the current Gemini mobile app guidance for the supported cases.
Keep topic preferences separate from deleting chat history
Instructions asking Gemini to forget or avoid topics are not a reliable way to erase past information. Google warns that “Instructions for Gemini to forget or avoid topics in chats doesn’t always work perfectly.” Its guidance says to delete chats about the topic from Gemini Apps activity if you want to make sure Gemini stops mentioning it. Gemini for Home is a separate transition
Adding Instructions for Gemini on a phone does not switch a smart speaker or home to Gemini for Home. Google describes Gemini for Home as a distinct voice-assistant transition with early access rolling out to select countries and languages. Its current guidance says adding a Google Home Speaker (2026) makes a home eligible to opt in; after a home switches, compatible devices use Gemini for Home instead of Google Assistant, and the cited guidance says the home cannot switch back. Availability depends on device, rollout, language, and in some cases a Google Home Premium subscription. Check Google’s Gemini for Home guidance before relying on eligibility or switching details, which may change.
Google separately describes Gemini Live on smart speakers and displays as a conversational mode, not a way to issue actions during the live conversation. Its guidance says to say “Hey Google” to stop the conversation and then issue a command; the described experience has device and app requirements and requires a Standard or Advanced Google Home Premium plan.
