The UAE Space Agency’s latest dated status update, published on 27 April 2026, said the spacecraft had entered Assembly, Integration and Testing after completing its Critical Design Review in 2025; the launch remains a plan, not a completed event.
What is the UAE’s Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt?
EMA is a UAE Space Agency mission to study asteroids in the main asteroid belt. The mission’s spacecraft is named MBR Explorer. The Agency describes a planned journey of about five billion kilometres, using gravity assists at Venus, Earth and Mars to shape the spacecraft’s route to the belt. UAE Space Agency mission overview
The mission is intended to investigate the origins and evolution of water-rich asteroids and assess their potential resources for future space exploration. When is MBR Explorer expected to launch?
The UAE Space Agency’s 27 April 2026 update said EMA had moved into Assembly, Integration and Testing after its Critical Design Review was completed in 2025. The Agency described tests under space-like conditions and gave Q1 2028 as the planned launch period. Its project page specifies March 2028 within a three-week launch window. These are schedule expectations, not confirmation of a launch date or an achieved milestone beyond the reported development status. What is the mission timeline?
The Agency describes EMA as a 13-year undertaking: six years for spacecraft development followed by seven years of flight to the main belt. The figure therefore covers development and the journey; it should not be read as 13 years of active asteroid science. The project page expects the first asteroid encounter in February 2030. Which asteroids will the spacecraft visit?
The Agency’s published target sequence names six planned flyby asteroids followed by a rendezvous with Justitia. It described the first encounter, at Westerwald, as expected in February 2030. The target list comes from a 2023 Agency announcement, so the planned sequence could change as mission planning develops. UAE Space Agency, 2023 science-team announcement

Will MBR Explorer land on an asteroid?
No. The Agency’s plan distinguishes the spacecraft’s final rendezvous with Justitia from the lander operation: a lander is to be deployed to study the asteroid. MBR Explorer itself is not described as landing. The Technology Innovation Institute is identified by the Agency as the lander developer. UAE Space Agency project announcement
