Screen brightness, mobile signal, apps, usage, and the phone’s software all affect battery life, so no setting guarantees a particular improvement. Google notes that battery life varies by device and recommends checking the manufacturer’s support guidance for device-specific instructions.
How do I make my Android phone battery last longer?
Begin with settings that reduce how long the display stays on and how much work apps do in the background. Then consider Battery Saver and connectivity changes. Android menu names and available features differ by manufacturer and version; the paths below are general directions, not universal instructions.
1. Reduce screen drain
- Shorten screen timeout. Set the display to turn off sooner when you are not using the phone.
- Lower brightness or use adaptive brightness. Choose a comfortable level rather than keeping the screen brighter than needed.
- Try dark theme. Google says dark theme can save battery on some screens, but the benefit is not guaranteed on every phone.
On Pixel phones, Google lists display controls under Settings > Display & touch. Pixel-specific options that can also reduce display activity include disabling Always-on Display, Smooth Display, or live wallpapers if your model offers them. Other manufacturers may use different names or locations.
2. Find apps using battery in the background
Open your phone’s battery settings and review which apps use the most power. If an app is using unusually high battery while you are not actively using it, check its background-use or battery-optimization options and restrict it if you do not need it running freely.

On supported Pixel phones, Adaptive Battery and battery optimization can limit activity for less-used apps. This may reduce performance or delay notifications. Google says a newly set-up or factory-reset Pixel may take a few weeks to learn usage patterns.
3. Turn on Battery Saver when the tradeoff is worth it
Enable Battery Saver manually when charge is low, or use its schedule if your phone offers one. Battery Saver can limit background activity and some visual effects or features; network connections and apps may be delayed. If you rely on prompt notifications or continuous background syncing, account for that before enabling it.

4. Reduce connectivity and high-demand activity
- Use Wi-Fi instead of mobile data when practical and the Wi-Fi connection is reliable.
- Turn off Bluetooth or Location when you are not using a feature that needs them.
- Avoid leaving a hotspot on for long periods if it is not needed.
- When conserving charge matters, reduce extended GPS navigation, video streaming, or graphics-heavy gaming.
Switching off Location or connectivity can interrupt services that depend on them, such as navigation, connected accessories, or location-based features. Turn them off only when that interruption is acceptable.
Which Android settings use less battery?
The most relevant setting depends on what is consuming power on your phone. Use battery-use information and your own habits to choose changes rather than relying on a universal ranking: Google does not provide comparable percentage savings for these settings.

Settings may reduce avoidable activity, but they cannot repair a degraded battery. Heat can make a battery drain faster and may damage it, so avoid leaving the phone in hot conditions. If the drain remains unusual, Google recommends restarting the phone and checking for Android and app updates. For persistent problems or device-specific steps, contact the manufacturer’s support service.
