Altman said experts are still unsure how to respond and argued that private chat conversations should not be shared with researchers without users’ consent.
What Altman was asked
Guiducci asked Altman about Laura Reiley, a journalist whose daughter Sophie died by suicide. After an OpenAI publicist tried to move the conversation along, Altman said he would answer. He described the broader issue as new and difficult: “We try to rely on expert opinion as much as we can, but experts also aren’t sure what to do.” The interview transcript is lightly edited for length and clarity.
What the interview says about Sophie’s case
Guiducci characterized Sophie as 29 and said she had spoken at length with ChatGPT about her decision. In his account of Reiley’s New York Times essay, he said the chatbot did not instruct her to die by suicide, agreed to act as her therapist, and helped edit her suicide notes. These are details presented by the interviewer, not findings established by the Vanity Fair transcript. The underlying essay and original chat records were not independently reviewed for this account, so the interview alone does not establish what the conversations contained or that ChatGPT caused Sophie’s death. India Today’s October 6, 2026 report also attributes the case details to Reiley’s essay.
Altman’s position on research access and AI support
Altman said OpenAI had put substantial work into reducing self-harm risks and that he believed AI products could help people in difficult moments, including people unable or unwilling to speak with a therapist. He also acknowledged harmful versions of these interactions and said experts differ on approaches such as mandated reporting. Those remarks describe Altman’s position; the interview does not independently demonstrate that ChatGPT is safe or clinically effective, or that it can substitute for therapy.

Asked whether chat logs could inform policy, therapeutic approaches, and mental-health education, Altman opposed sharing private conversations without consent: “Should we release people’s private data in some of their hardest moments to researchers? I think probably not without their consent, or I should say not without their consent.” That answer identifies a privacy principle, but leaves open how consent, urgent safety concerns, and research needs should be balanced.
Why he said AI should not replace human connection
Later in the interview, when asked what people should not use AI for, Altman answered: “Replacing human connection.” The remark is consistent with his acknowledgment that AI interactions can be harmful, even as he said he sees potential for products to help people facing difficult moments. The interview does not settle how AI systems should handle crisis conversations or what safeguards are effective.

What the interview establishes—and what it doesn’t
- It documents Altman’s response to a question about a case Guiducci summarized from Reiley’s essay.
- It records Altman saying experts are uncertain, opposing research access to private chats without consent, and warning against using AI as a replacement for human connection.
- It does not provide the original chat logs, verify the interviewer’s case description, establish that ChatGPT caused the death, or demonstrate that an AI product is an effective substitute for professional care.
