But stars are not universally clear or preferred: Netflix replaced its five-star system after saying members were confused about what the stars meant. Their staying power is best understood as a practical design choice, not proof that every audience or platform favors them.
Why do digital entertainment apps use star ratings?
A row of stars can communicate a relative judgment quickly: more filled stars generally indicate a higher rating. Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines call the star “a very recognizable ranking symbol” and caution that people may not associate other symbols with a rating scale. That familiarity gives stars a useful starting point when an interface needs a compact way to show a rating.
Recognizability is not the same as guaranteed understanding. A user still needs to know what is being rated, what the scale means, and whether the number reflects one person’s opinion, an aggregate, or a recommendation. Without that context, a familiar symbol can still leave the underlying question unanswered. Apple’s rating-indicator guidance is design advice, not evidence that stars are always the clearest or most effective choice.
What does a star rating tell you—and what does it not?
A star rating usually communicates an evaluation or ranking. For example, Sony’s U.S. PlayStation Store policy describes player-submitted five-star ratings for games. Such a rating is a signal about users’ assessments, rather than an official judgment about who should play the game.

A content rating answers a different question: whether a game’s content is appropriate for particular ages, and what content or interactive features it includes. The ESRB system provides age-rating categories, content descriptors, and interactive elements. Those details matter because a single score or icon cannot carry all the information a player or caregiver may need.
| Signal | What it communicates | Example |
|---|---|---|
| User star rating | A user’s assessment or ranking of a title; the exact meaning depends on the platform’s scale and presentation. | PlayStation Store player-submitted five-star game ratings, under Sony’s U.S. reviews policy. |
| Content rating | Age-category guidance and information about content or interactive features, rather than a measure of how much users liked the game. | ESRB categories, content descriptors, and interactive elements. |
For details about a particular game’s classification, consult its rating information rather than treating a high user score as an age-suitability signal. The ESRB’s explanation of its three-part system and its ratings overview describe what those classifications cover.

Why do stars persist, even though some services moved on?
Stars offer a compact, recognizable way to express a ranking, and digital storefronts have created more places for ratings and other game information to appear. The ESRB’s official history records its founding in 1994, a digital rating service for digitally delivered games in 2000, and the International Age Rating Coalition’s incorporation in 2013. Its timeline also records later adoption of IARC ratings by digital storefronts. These are milestones in rating and distribution systems—not measurements of star popularity or proof that stars caused those systems to succeed.
There is a clear counterexample to the idea that stars always work well. In its 2017 announcement, Netflix said it was retiring its five-star system for thumbs up and thumbs down because members were confused about what the stars did. That is Netflix’s explanation of its own product decision, not evidence that all users find star scales confusing. It does show why a simple-looking rating needs an understandable purpose.

The available examples establish that stars remain a recognizable option and that platforms can choose alternatives. They do not establish that stars are used everywhere in digital entertainment, that their use has one historical cause, or that audiences universally prefer them.

Start with the question the interface should answer. If the aim is to let people express a graded opinion, a star scale may be familiar—but explain the scale and what its ratings represent. If the aim is a quick binary recommendation, a thumbs-up or thumbs-down can be more direct, as Netflix’s change illustrates. Neither format automatically explains whether the result is personal, aggregated, or a platform recommendation.

- Define the signal: Say whether it represents a user review, an overall score, a recommendation, or age and content suitability.
- Explain the scale: Make clear what the endpoints mean and how users should interpret intermediate values.
- Pair symbols with details when needed: Age categories, content descriptors, and interactive elements provide information that a single icon cannot.
- Label custom icons: Apple warns that people may not recognize symbols other than stars as a rating scale, so a substitute should be explained rather than left to guesswork.
Stars endure because they can make ranking immediately legible in a small space. That usefulness depends on context: the symbol should fit the question, and the interface should make the answer clear.
