Hall-effect and TMR keyboards use magnetic sensors to track how far a key moves instead of registering a press only when metal contacts close. Both can support adjustable actuation and dynamic reset, but those features depend on the keyboard’s electronics and firmware. TMR is a different sensing method, not a proven universal upgrade over Hall effect—and neither term tells you how a keyboard will feel to type on.

What is a Hall-effect keyboard?

In a common Hall-effect design, a small magnet is fixed in the moving switch stem and a linear Hall sensor sits on the keyboard’s PCB beneath it. As you press a key, the magnet moves relative to the sensor, changing the sensor’s voltage output. The keyboard controller samples and calibrates that signal, then firmware interprets it as key position and decides when the press registers. Acheron’s technical guide describes this arrangement; Texas Instruments’ keyboard application note explains how an analog output can be used to set an actuation point.

Because the keyboard can read changing position rather than just an open-or-closed contact, compatible hardware and firmware can let you choose how far a key must travel before registering. That capability is not guaranteed by the Hall-effect label alone: implementation and software determine the available range and controls.

What is TMR sensing?

TMR stands for tunnel magnetoresistance. In the description from RTINGS, two ferromagnetic layers are separated by a very thin insulating barrier. Their magnetic alignment affects how readily electrons tunnel through the barrier, changing electrical resistance. A keyboard can interpret that change as movement of the switch’s magnet.

Hall-effect sensing reads a voltage response to a magnetic field; TMR sensing reads resistance changes in a magnetic tunnel junction. Both are ways to detect a magnet’s position, but they use different sensor mechanisms. Manufacturers promote potential TMR benefits such as sensitivity, signal quality, or lower power consumption. Those are claims about the technology and particular implementations, not proof that every TMR keyboard performs better than every Hall-effect keyboard.

How magnetic sensing differs from ordinary mechanical switches

A conventional mechanical switch registers a press when its electrical contacts meet and close a circuit. In a magnetic keyboard, the press can instead be detected from the magnet’s position without using contact closure as the sensing event. The key still moves through a physical switch mechanism and returns under spring force; “magnetic” describes how movement is sensed, not the absence of a mechanical key.

The sensor is generally on the PCB, while the moving switch carries the magnet. So “TMR switch” or “Hall-effect switch” can be imprecise if it suggests that the replaceable switch itself necessarily contains the sensor. Check the design of the exact keyboard.

What features can magnetic keyboards enable?

Adjustable actuation

Adjustable actuation lets you choose a supported point in the key’s travel at which a press registers. Hall sensors can provide a changing voltage that an analog-to-digital converter uses to set that point, as Texas Instruments explains in its keyboard position-sensing note. The actual adjustment range and step size are product-specific.

Rapid Trigger and dynamic reset

With dynamic reset, firmware can change when a key resets based on its movement instead of relying only on one fixed mechanical reset point. The exact behavior, controls, and supported settings vary by keyboard. A feature name alone does not establish how it behaves in a particular game or application.

Analog input

Some magnetic keyboards can expose continuous key-position values to software. Do not assume every model offers analog input, or that every application can use it: both hardware and firmware must support the mode.

Polling rate and adjustment steps

Polling rate and advertised adjustment increments are product specifications, not guarantees of a visible improvement in ordinary typing or gaming. In particular, a smaller step does not by itself prove greater real-world accuracy.

Are TMR keyboards better than Hall-effect keyboards?

Not on the available evidence as a universal rule. RTINGS reports that its early TMR examples nearly matched many high-end Hall-effect models in input accuracy and says future adoption of TMR remains uncertain. That finding concerns the examples it evaluated; it does not establish a winner for every model, nor does it show that a published resolution or polling figure translates into a better experience.

Can a TMR keyboard use ordinary mechanical switches?

Sometimes, but only when the particular keyboard’s PCB and socket design explicitly support them. Akko and CHERRY advertise support for both magnetic and conventional mechanical switches on some products, but one model’s compatibility does not carry over to all TMR boards. Verify the exact keyboard and switch combination before buying; the magnetic sensing system still needs a compatible arrangement to detect key movement.

How to compare magnetic keyboard specifications

  • Sensing and calibration: Identify whether the board uses Hall effect, TMR, optical sensing, inductive sensing, or another approach. Prefer independent testing of consistency where available.
  • Firmware: Check the supported actuation range, reset behavior, analog modes, calibration options, and whether settings can be saved or used across operating systems.
  • Switch compatibility: Confirm whether the board accepts magnetic switches only or explicitly supports conventional mechanical switches, and verify the exact switch type.
  • Typing experience: Evaluate force, travel, stability, sound, keycaps, and case construction from product-specific specifications or testing. Sensor type does not determine whether a key feels smooth, tactile, heavy, loud, or quiet.
  • Connection and battery: For a wireless model, consider battery capacity and seek independent runtime results when available; manufacturer specifications are not the same as tested runtime.
  • Long-term ownership: Check software quality, firmware updates, replacement-switch availability, warranty, and support rather than assuming these are equivalent across brands.

Other switch-position sensing methods

Magnetic sensing is not the only way to read key movement without a conventional contact closure. RTINGS describes analog optical switches, which track a stem with light, and inductive switches, which use coils in the PCB. Their features can overlap with magnetic keyboards, but the sensing mechanisms differ. The available comparisons do not establish one approach as best for every use.
