Dell System Update (DSU) versions earlier than 2.3.0.0 are affected by five vulnerabilities covered by Dell advisory DSA-2026-324. The most severe, CVE-2026-86360, is a path traversal flaw that Dell says could let an unauthenticated attacker with remote access execute code with root privileges. Dell identifies DSU 2.3.0.0 or later as remediated and recommends upgrading at the earliest opportunity.

What is the Dell DSU vulnerability?

CVE-2026-86360 is a path traversal vulnerability in Dell System Update. Dell rates it Critical and assigns it a CVSS 3.1 base score of 9.6. According to Dell’s DSA-2026-324 advisory, an unauthenticated attacker with remote access could potentially exploit the flaw to access the filesystem and execute arbitrary code with root privileges. Dell warns that successful exploitation could completely compromise the vulnerable application and its underlying operating system.

Dell’s published vector is AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H: network access, low attack complexity, no privileges required, user interaction required, changed scope, and high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts. The 9.6 figure is Dell’s base score, not a prediction that every installation faces the same practical risk; the company advises organizations to consider relevant temporal and environmental scores as well.

Which Dell System Update versions are affected?

Dell lists all DSU versions before 2.3.0.0 as affected. Versions 2.3.0.0 or later are listed as remediated. The product affected is DSU by version; the advisory does not say that every Dell PowerEdge server is vulnerable or give a count of exposed installations.

DSU is a command-line deployment tool that enterprise IT administrators use to deploy BIOS, firmware, and software updates to Linux and Windows systems on Dell PowerEdge infrastructure, according to BleepingComputer. Administrators should check where DSU is deployed and identify any instances below the fixed version.

How to remediate the DSU flaw

  1. Inventory Dell systems and determine which have Dell System Update installed, including the installed version.
  2. For every installation earlier than 2.3.0.0, obtain the updated DSU package through Dell’s security advisory and linked DSU download.
  3. Upgrade to DSU 2.3.0.0 or later, then verify the installed version on each system against Dell’s remediated-version guidance.

Dell recommends customers upgrade at the earliest opportunity. The advisory’s upgrade recommendation addresses the five listed DSU vulnerabilities, not only the critical path traversal issue.
