Possibly, but the evidence is narrow and mixed. One controlled language-learning study found that cervical transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tcVNS) was associated with faster vocabulary recall during practice and better recall on a test 24 hours later, without stimulation. That is a promising result for one task and a highly selected group—not proof that VNS makes everyday skills stick over months or years.
What does it mean for a skill to “stick”?
Improved performance while practicing and retention after practice are different outcomes. A learner may recall words more quickly during training without retaining them later. To test retention, researchers assess performance after a delay, ideally without stimulation. The directly relevant language study measured delayed recall after 24 hours; it did not establish whether any advantage lasts for months or years.
What the language-learning study found
A double-blind, sham-controlled study published in Scientific Reports tested transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation during a five-day second-language vocabulary program. Participants were highly selected career linguists training at the U.S. Department of Defense’s premier language school, so they do not represent typical learners.
The paper examined both auricular stimulation, applied at the ear, and cervical stimulation, applied at the neck. The reported accelerated vocabulary recall during training on days 2–4 and the 24-hour retention benefit were associated with cervical tcVNS. The final retention test was conducted without stimulation. The authors also reported less fatigue and greater focus on a mood questionnaire, but those measures do not establish a general learning benefit.

The study used Xen by Neuvana for auricular stimulation and gammaCore for cervical stimulation. Those were devices used within an experimental protocol; the findings do not show that simply owning either device, or using it outside that protocol, improves learning. Why results from other tasks do not establish a general effect
VNS studies differ in the stimulation route, how stimulation is paired with learning, who participates, what is measured, and how long researchers wait before testing retention. Findings from one task therefore cannot be treated as a reliable prediction for another.

Why stroke-rehabilitation findings are a separate question
VNS is also studied as part of rehabilitation after stroke, but that clinical context does not establish a benefit for healthy people learning new skills. A 2024 systematic review covered 29 neurorehabilitation studies, including animal models and human stroke research. It described varied methods and trends toward improved motor outcomes in controlled human studies, while noting severe adverse events related to surgery in invasive VNS and the need for further comparisons. Those findings should not be read as evidence of general learning enhancement. Read the review.
On August 27, 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced approval of the prescription MicroTransponder Vivistim Paired VNS System for treating moderate-to-severe upper-extremity motor deficits associated with chronic ischemic stroke, when paired with rehabilitation. The FDA announcement describes a clinical study involving 108 patients at 19 sites in the United States and United Kingdom; those figures concern the stroke-rehabilitation indication, not learning enhancement. In that stroke context, FDA official Christopher M. Loftus, M.D., then acting director of the agency’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health Office of Neurological and Physical Medicine Devices, said: “People who have lost mobility in their hands and arms due to ischemic stroke are often limited in their treatment options for regaining motor function”. This describes the clinical need the system addresses; it is not a claim about boosting learning in healthy people.

The language result is worth taking seriously, but it does not provide a basis for choosing a stimulation device or following a consumer protocol. The studies do not establish a population-level effect for ordinary everyday skill learning, a reliable dose or schedule, or long-term retention across different skills. The evidence also includes task-specific effects in both directions and a motor study with neural changes but no behavioral improvement.

For now, treat VNS as an experimental learning question rather than a proven study aid. A stronger case would require replicated controlled studies across broader groups and different skills, with delayed tests that show whether performance remains better after stimulation and practice have ended.
