In a poll with just under 1,500 responses, 36% chose the default option and 30.7% said they were unaware of the setting. These results describe Android Authority readers who responded—not Android users as a whole.
What did the Android Authority poll find?
Andy Walker’s October 6, 2026, report asked readers: “Do you select your preferred Bluetooth audio codec, or do you let your phone take control?” The responses split across four choices:

The poll had just under 1,500 responses. Android Authority did not provide a representative sampling frame or detailed methodology, so the percentages should be read as the responses of that poll’s participants, not as estimates for all Android owners.
What happens when the codec setting stays on default?
According to Walker’s report, leaving the setting at default lets the phone and Bluetooth headphones negotiate which codec to use. The setting can be hard to notice if someone is not exploring Android Developer Settings, which helps explain why some respondents said they had never seen it.

The poll does not document a universal settings path, Android-version coverage, or the codec options available on particular phones and headphones. Menu names and choices may vary by device; check the instructions for the specific phone before changing anything.
Does manually selecting a codec improve sound?
The poll does not measure listening quality or show that choosing a codec manually improves audio for every listener. Android Authority also points out that sound quality is only one consideration: stability, compatibility, efficiency, and latency can matter too. A codec that looks preferable on paper may not be the best choice for a particular phone-and-headphone combination.

Walker’s advice was to leave the setting alone and let the devices negotiate. That is his editorial view, not an official Android recommendation or a rule that applies to every setup. The report does not compare codecs, test named devices, or provide compatibility data for specific headphone models.
