What OpenAI announced—and who gets it
On October 5, 2026, OpenAI announced textGrain, an invisible watermark for selected text outputs. The company said API customers worldwide could opt in for supported models. It also planned to roll out watermarks to eligible ChatGPT and Codex text output in the EU over the following weeks, across all plans. OpenAI said the consumer-app rollout would be EU-only at launch, and that it was working with cloud partners to extend watermarks to eligible outputs served through them. These are the rollout plans OpenAI announced, not a claim that every output is already watermarked.
OpenAI connected its EU rollout to machine-readable marking requirements under the EU AI Act and its commitments under the EU Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content. That is the company’s explanation for the rollout, not a complete interpretation of the law or advice about every use case. OpenAI’s announcement describes its stated approach.
How textGrain works
When generating text, a language model has multiple plausible choices for the next word or word piece. OpenAI says textGrain subtly shifts those random choices so that the wording across a passage carries a statistical signal. A detector can search for that signal later.

The signal is in the pattern of word choices. OpenAI says textGrain does not insert hidden characters, invisible spaces, unusual punctuation, or extra watermark-only tokens. It is therefore different from a visible notice and from a classifier that only analyzes text after generation without an embedded watermark.
Enabling it through the API
OpenAI says API customers can enable text watermarking at the organization or project level and choose which supported models receive a watermark. Model eligibility may change, so customers should check current settings rather than assume every model is supported. Turning on watermarking does not automatically provide access to the detector. OpenAI’s Help Center article describes the feature and access limits.
How accurate is OpenAI’s text watermark detector?
OpenAI’s published tests show that detection depends on passage length, topic, and editing. The company reported the following results from its 2026 evaluations; they are vendor-reported figures, not independent measurements:

The figures apply to OpenAI’s stated test conditions; they do not predict the result for every passage or real-world use. OpenAI also says detection is substantially lower for mathematics, where there is less flexibility in word choice. Short, formulaic, or heavily edited writing gives a detector less signal to work with.
OpenAI says watermarking did not produce meaningful differences across the benchmarks it uses for its Astra model, and its Help Center says observed differences fell within the noise of its evaluation runs. Those are company-reported quality results. The cited sources do not provide an independent test of textGrain’s quality impact or deployed detection performance.
Can editing remove an OpenAI text watermark?
Editing can make a watermark harder to detect. In OpenAI’s 400-token tests, replacing 10% of words with synonyms reduced detection from about 92% to 66%; replacing 25% reduced it to 17%. That demonstrates sensitivity to those specific synonym substitutions, not a universal recipe for removing a watermark or a guarantee that any edited passage will evade detection.

Other factors also affect results: OpenAI reports lower detection on shorter passages and on mathematics. A negative result therefore cannot establish that a person wrote the text, or that no OpenAI system was involved.

- which person, account, prompt, or conversation was involved;
- how much a human contributed through judgment, editing, or creative work;
- who owns the text or is responsible for it; or
- whether the passage is true, accurate, harmful, or presented in the right context.
A negative result is not proof of human authorship. A watermark may be difficult to detect in a short or constrained passage, may be weakened by editing or translation, or may be absent because the text came from an unsupported model, predates the rollout, or was generated with another provider’s tools.

Can you check text for an OpenAI watermark?
Not through a public self-service text checker at launch. OpenAI says approved researchers and expert organizations may apply for detector access, initially on a case-by-case basis. The company’s Help Center lists research into provenance and detection reliability as examples of qualifying uses. API customers should also note that enabling watermarked generation does not grant detector access.
OpenAI’s image and audio provenance tools are a separate offering: its Help Center says those verification tools are publicly accessible to organizations, while text detection is restricted. OpenAI also says machine-readable provenance signals do not replace visible labels or other notices that may be required.
Why the “weak sauce” verdict needs context
The Register used “weak sauce” in its October 6, 2026 coverage, pointing to the synonym-edit results and the limited EU consumer rollout. That phrase is an editorial judgment, not a technical performance category. The test results support a narrower conclusion: textGrain can detect many marked passages under some disclosed conditions, but its reliability is not uniform and can fall substantially after modest wording changes.

Its experiments examine an open-source SynthID-Text implementation on two open-weight models, not OpenAI’s textGrain, so they do not establish textGrain’s performance. OpenAI itself cautions: “Text watermarking and detection remain early technologies with significant limitations, and views about their benefits and responsible uses are still developing.”
