Sam Altman’s “punch a bully back in the nose” line was a metaphor for pushing back against Elon Musk, not a literal call for violence. In a Vanity Fair interview, as reported by Digit on 6 October 2026 via Business Insider, Altman criticized Musk’s conduct while saying he would still work with him.
What did Sam Altman say about Elon Musk?
Digit reports that Altman said: “I think once in a while you’ve got to punch a bully back in the nose,” adding, “And I also think Elon, like many bullies, only respects people who do.” The wording is figurative: the report presents it as a pointed description of how Altman believes one should respond to a bully, not as a suggestion of physical violence.
The quotation is attributed to Altman in an interview with Vanity Fair, which Digit encountered via Business Insider. The full interview transcript and its publication date are not given in Digit’s report, so the wording here is limited to the quotations Digit reproduced.
Why did Altman say it?
Altman was describing a relationship that shifted from collaboration to public conflict. He and Musk were once allies and helped start OpenAI. Their relationship later broke down, leading to public disputes and legal battles, though Digit’s account does not detail the claims or the procedural status of those cases.

Digit also recounts a social-media exchange in July, without specifying the year in its displayed account. Musk replied to an accusation against Altman, “He takes scamming to a whole new level”; Altman later mocked Musk’s support for orbital data centers. The exchange illustrates the public antagonism, but the report does not establish further context for either comment.
Altman said he would still work with Musk
Altman’s criticism did not amount to ruling out cooperation. Digit reports him saying: “If you want me to be able to work with him, maybe you should be happy I hit back once in a while, but I will work with Elon, of course.” He connected that willingness to the possibility that they might need to work together as the AI industry faces safety concerns.

He also acknowledged that he was not beyond criticism. Digit attributes these remarks to him: “I won’t call myself a saint,” and “I’m not sure if I’m the one that you’re supposed to come after between Elon and me.” In other words, Altman conceded his own imperfections while disputing that he should bear the main blame in the conflict.

The line is best read as Altman’s combative metaphor for answering what he considers bullying. It captures his view of the personal dispute, not a neutral finding about Musk’s character or an account of the legal cases. His separate statement that he would work with Musk shows that he sees confrontation and possible cooperation as compatible.
