As of the October 7, 2026 snapshot, the NICCS Cybersecurity Career Map displayed 145 U.S. federal cybersecurity openings across 538 cities in 53 states and territories. That is a dated, changing federal listing—not a live count of every cybersecurity vacancy in the United States or worldwide. Check each announcement on USAJOBS before applying; some listings in the snapshot had an October 6 deadline and may no longer be open.

Where to find current cybersecurity openings

Start with the NICCS Cybersecurity Career Map, which surfaces federal cybersecurity announcements powered by USAJOBS. The map lets job seekers explore by location and salary. Its October 7, 2026 snapshot showed 145 distinct openings across 538 cities in 53 states or territories. The display changes over time, and the count covers this federal search—not private-sector roles or all jobs available globally.

Use the map to discover roles, then open the corresponding USAJOBS announcement. Confirm that applications are still being accepted and read the official notice for the controlling details. An October 6, 2026 apply-by date in a snapshot does not mean the listing remains open on October 7.

Examples of roles in the snapshot

The map’s results included several kinds of work, from technical writing to specialist and management positions. These examples illustrate the range of titles; they are not a complete list of openings or locations.

How to decide whether a listing fits

Titles alone do not establish whether a job is suitable. Compare each official announcement on the factors that affect eligibility and day-to-day fit:

  • Job family and seniority: distinguish hands-on technical, policy, program-management, supervisory, and writing responsibilities.
  • Experience and credentials: check the required and preferred qualifications in the announcement rather than assuming a credential is mandatory based on the title.
  • Location and work arrangement: confirm the duty location and any telework details in the official posting; a map filter or indicator is not a substitute for the full notice.
  • Salary: read the stated range and any conditions or locality information in the announcement.
  • Deadline: confirm the closing date and whether the application window is still open.
  • Eligibility and clearance: review citizenship, hiring-path, security-clearance, and other conditions that apply to that specific position.

Prepare an application for the specific announcement

CISA’s Cybersecurity/IT Careers page advises applicants: “Be sure to tailor your resume to the specific job announcement and attach relevant documents.” Follow the notice’s instructions for the resume, forms, transcripts, certifications, or other required attachments; requirements differ by position. A general cybersecurity resume may not make the experience and qualifications relevant to a particular federal role clear.

What workforce studies can—and cannot—tell job seekers

Workforce reports can indicate which capabilities organizations say they need, but they are not job boards and do not verify that a particular vacancy is open.

  • ISC2’s 2025 Workforce Study drew on online survey responses from 16,029 cybersecurity practitioners and decision-makers. Data were collected in July and August 2025 across North America, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, and Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. ISC2 did not publish a workforce-gap estimate in that edition because respondents emphasized skills needs over a single headcount-gap figure.
  • ISC2’s 2026 analysis of the 2025 study reported that 95% of respondents said their organizations had at least one cybersecurity skills need, while 59% reported a critical or significant deficiency. Needs included AI, cloud computing, risk assessment, application security, and governance, risk management, and compliance (GRC). These are survey responses, not counts of open positions.
  • The SANS Institute’s 2026 Cybersecurity Workforce Research Report reported survey findings that the need for specialists to handle new roles rose from 23% in 2025 to 53% in 2026. The finding is not a live vacancy count and is not established as a U.S.-only rate.

These findings can help readers notice skill areas to investigate while comparing roles. They do not establish the total number of cybersecurity jobs open in the private sector or worldwide. The direct vacancy count here is specifically a U.S. federal snapshot. The U.K. government maintains separate material on cybersecurity skills and labor demand in the U.K.; that market should not be combined with the U.S. federal count.
