Windows 11 adds a taskbar shortcut for starting an internet speed test, but it is not a live speed meter: the test opens in your default browser. Find it in Wi-Fi or Cellular Quick Settings, or right-click the network icon in the system tray.
How to start a speed test from the taskbar
- Open the network controls. Select the Wi-Fi or Cellular Quick Settings area, or right-click the network icon in the system tray.
- Choose the speed-test option. The wording may vary; Microsoft’s release note describes the feature rather than specifying a universal menu label.
- Run the test in your browser. The shortcut opens your default browser. PCWorld reported on October 5, 2026, that the page is Bing’s speed test, powered by Ookla; its walkthrough says to select Start on the page to see ping, download, and upload results. Microsoft says the test measures Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Cellular connections. Its February 17, 2026, Release Preview announcement describes the shortcut as a way to check network performance and troubleshoot issues. Windows Insider release notes
Why the option may be missing
The feature was announced for Windows 11 Release Preview builds 26100.7918 and 26200.7918, associated with KB5077241 and versions 24H2 and 25H2. Microsoft marked it as a gradual rollout, so the option did not necessarily appear on every eligible device at once. Microsoft also says availability can vary by device and market, and that features may arrive through updates on different schedules. Microsoft’s Windows update guidance
If you do not see the entry, check Settings > Windows Update for available updates and try again later. Its absence alone does not show that your PC is incompatible.

What the results can—and cannot—tell you
A test gives you a snapshot of network performance for the connection used at that time. If Wi-Fi results are unexpectedly low, you can compare them with an Ethernet test, if your PC and network equipment support a wired connection. Microsoft lists both connection types; a cable is optional and the taskbar shortcut itself does not require one.
A low result by itself does not identify the cause. It does not establish whether the issue is with your internet provider, router, Wi-Fi conditions, or PC, and the cited guidance sets no universal threshold for a result that counts as slow. Treat the measurement as a starting point for troubleshooting, not a diagnosis or a continuous display of current bandwidth.
