You can switch from Plex to Jellyfin without moving your movie and TV files: point Jellyfin’s libraries at the folders you already use. But the server database is not a drop-in transfer, so expect to rebuild and review metadata, and handle watched status or user accounts separately. Whether the change is worth it depends partly on how you watch remotely and which Plex policy applies to your account and apps.
What “moving your library” means
Your media files and the server’s information about them are separate things. Jellyfin can scan the same folders Plex uses, but it builds its own libraries and database. That means changing server software does not inherently require copying your movies or shows, but it also does not bring over Plex’s entire database, metadata, artwork, users, and playback history as one package.
Jellyfin’s migration documentation says its internal databases are difficult to copy or adjust and describes third-party API scripts that can copy watched status and users between servers. Those are selected state transfers—not a full Plex-to-Jellyfin database migration. Jellyfin’s migration guide explains the distinction.
How to move from Plex to Jellyfin
1. Keep your existing media folders
Before changing anything, note the paths Plex uses for movies, television, music, and other media. In Jellyfin, create a separate library for each content type and add the existing folder paths. A Jellyfin library can reference multiple paths, so you do not have to consolidate folders first.

Choose the appropriate library type rather than combining unrelated content. Jellyfin warns that mixed libraries can produce unreliable metadata results. Its library documentation covers content types and folder paths.
2. Let Jellyfin scan and rebuild metadata
Jellyfin has its own metadata process. Its default sources include TMDb, OMDb, and local NFO files; additional providers can be added through plugins. A first scan may need review for ambiguous titles, editions, custom episode ordering, artwork, and fields you edited manually in Plex. Do not assume Plex’s posters or other metadata will appear just because the files are in the same locations.

- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Check a sample from each library after scanning, including titles with unusual names or multiple cuts. If a match is wrong, correct it in Jellyfin and confirm the result before relying on the library’s metadata more broadly. Jellyfin’s metadata guide describes providers and metadata handling.
3. Decide whether to transfer watched status or users
If preserving watched status matters, treat it as a separate migration task. Jellyfin documents third-party scripts that use APIs to copy watched status and users from Plex, but the exact capabilities and matching behavior depend on the script. Check what it supports before running it; it is not a transfer of Plex’s full library database.

Plex’s own watch-state and rating sync is an opt-in Plex account feature with server-version and metadata-agent requirements. It is not, by itself, an exporter or importer that moves your history into Jellyfin. See Plex’s watch-state and ratings sync documentation for its scope.
4. Set up Jellyfin users and remote access
Create the Jellyfin users you need, then set each person’s library access and remote-connection permissions. A successful library scan does not automatically configure access from outside your home network; remote viewing also depends on your network setup.

Jellyfin can run without an internet connection, but online metadata providers need internet access. Its documentation covers networking and user permissions. Check remote access separately from local playback and library scanning.
What happens to Plex posters, metadata, and history?
| Item | What to expect in Jellyfin |
|---|---|
| Movie and TV files | They can stay in their existing folders; add those paths to Jellyfin libraries. |
| Server database | Not a drop-in transfer. Jellyfin says its internal databases are difficult to copy or adjust. |
| Metadata and artwork | Jellyfin builds metadata using its own providers and local files. Review matches and artwork; a complete carry-over from Plex is not established. |
| Watched status and users | Third-party API scripts may copy these selected items. Verify a tool’s scope and matching behavior before use. |
| Plex watch-state sync | Plex’s opt-in sync is not a direct Plex-to-Jellyfin migration method. |
Do you need Plex Pass to watch your own movies remotely?
Plex’s policy is specific to remote playback of personal video in affected apps; it does not mean all Plex features or local viewing became paid. Plex defines remote playback as streaming when you are not on the same local network. Since April 29, 2025, its documented subscription routes for affected apps are Plex Pass on the server administrator’s account, Plex Pass on the viewing account, or Remote Watch Pass on the viewing account. A server administrator’s Plex Pass allows other users of that server to stream remotely under the documented policy.

Plex says this rule covers movies, TV, and other personal video, not music in Plexamp or photos in Plex Photos. Its March 19, 2025 announcement says the requirements expanded to additional apps and platforms on April 29, 2026. Because subscription terms and platform coverage can change, check Plex’s current remote-playback support page and the 2025 policy announcement and updates for the current rules. The policy is one reason to consider Jellyfin, but switching also means taking responsibility for Jellyfin’s network configuration and checking that its clients work on the devices you use.
When switching is a good fit
- You want to keep media in its current folders and are comfortable creating new Jellyfin libraries.
- You are willing to check rebuilt metadata and artwork rather than expecting a complete Plex-state clone.
- You can configure and maintain remote access yourself if you need to stream away from home.
- You have checked Jellyfin client availability for your devices instead of assuming every Plex client has an equivalent.
If you rely on Plex’s existing metadata, custom artwork, watch history, or account setup, plan time to recreate or selectively transfer what matters before retiring the Plex server. The move can leave the media files untouched, but it is not a one-click clone of the Plex experience.
