Seiko’s Power Design Project Panda launch is a pair of limited-edition quartz chronographs: the white-dial HHK001P1, limited to 3,000 pieces worldwide, and the pink-dial HHK002P1, limited to 2,000. Both use Seiko’s 8T61 movement and share the same listed case dimensions and chronograph functions. Seiko says the design turns chronograph details into a panda face. The official pages reviewed do not establish that the original concept watch dates to 2024.

How does the design make the chronograph look like a panda?
Seiko’s Power Design Project starts with a familiar watch nickname. Chronographs with a light dial and darker contrasting sub-dials are often called “panda” watches. The project team asked, “Do the world’s panda-style watch dials really resemble pandas?” Its answer was to make the animal’s features part of the watch’s layout rather than rely only on contrasting colors.

#1 Best Overall
- Item shape: Round
- Power source type: Solar Powered
- Clasp type: Push Button Deployment Clasp
- The two chronograph pushers suggest panda ears.
- The embossed, radial dial pattern is meant to evoke fur.
- The recessed, drooping sub-dials form the eyes.
- Nose and mouth details sit at six o’clock.
- The hands are shaped like bamboo leaves.
- The tachymeter scale is named the “SASAMETER,” using sasa, Japanese for bamboo leaves.
Seiko says the case back shows a panda from behind, with its tail deliberately white. The presentation boxes also follow the variants: rolling-panda imagery for the black-and-white version and a soft-pink, newborn-panda inspiration for the pink version. The company’s Power Design Project collection 2 page explains these design choices. It also describes the outer tachymeter as indicating speed based on the time taken to travel one kilometer; that is a scale explanation, not a claim about an animal’s real-world speed.
What specifications do the two models share?
The UK product listings give the following specifications for both watches. Seiko calls them splash resistant; that wording should not be read as a swimming or diving rating.

Seiko’s UK listings describe the white model’s rounded pushers as panda ears and note its minimized crown at 12 o’clock. The official specifications establish no functional performance difference between the white and pink variants; their published distinctions are color, edition quantity, and some presentation details.
Is the concept watch confirmed as a 2024 design?
Not by the official pages reviewed. Seiko’s European boutique says the concept attracted attention at its “Incredibly Specialized Watches Exhibition” and has now become limited editions, but the retrieved official material does not date that exhibition or establish an exact reference for the earlier concept. The 2024 date in the original headline therefore should not be treated as verified chronology.

How is this different from Seiko’s Speedtimer Panda chronographs?
“Seiko Panda chronograph” can also refer to the Prospex Speedtimer mechanical chronographs, a separate product story. In a November 21, 2023 announcement, Seiko said Speedtimer models SRQ047 and limited-edition SRQ049 drew on a 1972 Speedtimer design. SRQ049 commemorated the Seiko brand’s 100th anniversary and was limited to 1,000 pieces; it had a blue-grey dial with silver-white sub-dials. Both announced models used automatic caliber 8R48 with a column wheel and vertical clutch, and had a 45-hour power reserve. Those references, movement details, and 1972 inspiration do not apply to the Power Design Project HHK001P1 and HHK002P1. See Seiko’s November 21, 2023 Speedtimer announcement.
