OpenAI announced textGrain, a statistical watermark embedded in the word choices of some AI-generated text. API customers worldwide can opt in for select models; eligible ChatGPT and Codex text output in the European Union is slated to receive the watermark over the coming weeks. The detector will initially be available only to approved researchers and expert organizations—not the public.
What is textGrain?
textGrain is OpenAI’s name for a statistical signal embedded in generated text through the model’s word or word-piece choices. No individual word needs to look unusual: the signal is formed by patterns across a passage that a detector can assess.
It is not a visible label, a string of hidden characters, or document metadata. OpenAI says its method does not insert invisible spaces, hidden characters, or unusual punctuation. It is more useful to think of textGrain as a pattern in the wording than as a tag attached to a file. OpenAI’s announcement and its help article on provenance signals describe the approach.
How is OpenAI rolling out the watermark?
OpenAI announced the plan on October 5, 2026. Its two deployment tracks differ by product and region:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Where | What OpenAI said | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI API | Customers worldwide can opt in to watermarking for select models. | Available starting October 5, 2026; off by default. |
| ChatGPT and Codex | Eligible text output will receive watermarks. | Planned for the European Union over the coming weeks; OpenAI did not state that this applies to all output or specify every eligible model. |
| Text detector | OpenAI is accepting applications for access. | Initially limited to approved researchers and expert organizations; not publicly available at launch. |
OpenAI says the EU rollout responds to the EU AI Act and its commitments under the EU Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content. That is the company’s stated rationale; the announcement does not by itself resolve every question about legal obligations or interpretation.
Can OpenAI detect AI-generated text?
OpenAI’s detector is designed to look for its own textGrain watermark, not to identify text from every AI system. OpenAI’s API documentation on content provenance says its checks cover supported OpenAI signals and are not a general-purpose AI detector. At launch, access to the text detector is restricted to approved researchers and expert organizations.

That distinction matters because “AI detection” can describe different methods. textGrain embeds a signal during generation. A classifier-style detector instead infers whether text may be AI-generated from patterns in the finished passage; it does not check for textGrain specifically. Metadata-based credentials are another approach: they can store origin or editing history in a file, but metadata may be stripped. OpenAI discusses C2PA Content Credentials for supported images and SynthID for supported images and audio as parts of its broader provenance work, not as textGrain systems. OpenAI’s overview of content provenance provides that context.

| Test described by OpenAI | Reported result |
|---|---|
| Psychology passages, 200 tokens, at a 1% target false-positive rate | About 80% detection. |
| Psychology passages, 400 tokens, at a 1% target false-positive rate | About 95% detection. |
| Mathematics passages | Detection was substantially lower; OpenAI attributed the difficulty to less-flexible word choice. |
| 400-token passages with 10% of words replaced by synonyms | Detection fell from about 92% to 66%. |
| 400-token passages with 25% of words replaced by synonyms | Detection fell to 17%. |
These are results under the specific evaluation conditions OpenAI described, not a guarantee that the detector will perform similarly on arbitrary writing. OpenAI said textGrain matched or exceeded other approaches it tested, including SynthID for text, but also cautioned that strong results in ideal conditions do not ensure reliable everyday detection.
Why passage length and subject matter matter
A statistical signal is easier to assess when there is enough text and the model has room to choose among plausible words. OpenAI says short passages usually do not contain enough text for reliable detection. Mathematics and code can be harder because their conventions leave fewer reasonable next-word choices. OpenAI’s help material cites the EU Code of Practice as not requiring watermarks for outputs shorter than 200 tokens—about 150 English words—or for code snippets.

Why editing can weaken the signal
Replacing words with synonyms can disrupt the pattern even when a passage still reads naturally. OpenAI’s evaluation showed a sizable decline after the specified synonym substitutions, but it should not be read as a universal editing threshold: the result applies to the particular 400-token passages and replacement rates in that evaluation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a positive or negative result means
A positive result can be evidence that an OpenAI system likely generated or processed some of a passage. It does not determine how much text came from the model, how much a person edited, who used the system, who owns the writing, whether its use was lawful, who is responsible for it, or whether it is accurate. As OpenAI puts it, “A watermark does not measure human contribution.”

A negative result does not prove that a person wrote the text. The passage might be too short, use constrained language, have been edited or translated, come from an unsupported or older model, or have been generated by another company’s system. OpenAI likewise says, “The absence of a detected watermark does not prove human authorship.”
How textGrain differs from other provenance methods
TextGrain embeds a statistical signal in wording. Metadata-based credentials can carry richer origin or history information but depend on metadata remaining with the file. Classifier-style detectors make an inference from text patterns rather than checking for a watermark. These approaches answer different questions, and none should be treated as a complete authorship record: a textGrain result does not identify a person or quantify human involvement, while a classifier is not proof of origin.
OpenAI describes C2PA credentials for supported images and SynthID for supported images and audio in its broader content-provenance work. Those are context for the distinction between provenance methods, not alternatives to or components of textGrain’s text detector.
