1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor most work buyers, the 13-inch MacBook Air M5 is the better value: it starts at $1,099 with 512GB of storage, compared with $1,199.99 for the 13-inch Surface Laptop with 256GB. Choose the Surface instead if your work depends on Windows 11, a touchscreen, or USB-A. One important caveat: the Surface is not scheduled to reach retail until October 13, 2026, so its performance and battery life have not yet been independently tested.

“X2 Plus” refers to the Qualcomm processor, not the laptop’s product name. Microsoft identifies this model as the 13-inch Surface Laptop in its Surface Laptop 8th Edition family.
Price and storage: the Air starts cheaper and includes more
The headline price difference is already in Apple’s favor: the MacBook Air M5 starts at $1,099 with 512GB, while the Surface starts at $1,199.99 with 256GB. That means the Air costs $100.99 less at the starting configuration and includes twice the storage.
What matching storage could cost
The Surface consumer range tops out at 512GB UFS storage. Microsoft’s listed top consumer configuration is $1,499.99 for 24GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, as reported by The Gadgeteer in 2026. That is not a like-for-like price against the Air’s 16GB/512GB starting model, and the price for a 16GB/512GB Surface configuration has not been established here. Still, buyers should not assume the Surface can be upgraded to 512GB for only a small surcharge: its confirmed 24GB/512GB tier is $400.99 above the Air’s entry price.

For a storage-conscious worker, the practical comparison is therefore more than “Apple is cheaper.” The Air gives you 512GB at its entry price; the Surface’s entry model gives you 256GB, and the cited top configuration costs substantially more. If your files live mostly in cloud storage or on external drives, the Surface’s smaller base capacity may matter less.
Performance: M5 has the stronger evidence, while Surface claims need testing
The available processor specifications favor the MacBook Air on core count: the M5 has a 10-core CPU, while the Snapdragon X2 Plus in this Surface has six CPU cores. TechRadar reports that the X2 Plus falls short of the M5, particularly in single-core performance. That matters for everyday work that depends on quick response from individual tasks, though core counts alone do not predict every workload.
Microsoft says the new Surface is up to 17% faster in Office workloads, up to 18% more battery-efficient, and has more than 60% faster graphics than the previous Surface generation. Those are Microsoft internal comparisons against its own earlier model—not results against the MacBook Air M5. The 80-TOPS NPU is a specification for AI processing capability, not a measure of general CPU speed.

The Surface is scheduled to ship on October 13, 2026, and there are no independent benchmark results or battery tests for it yet. Treat performance claims as provisional until independent testing is available. The MacBook Air has been on sale for nearly seven months, giving buyers a longer period of real-world use and review evidence to consider.

Battery life: compare the ratings cautiously
Microsoft rates the Surface Laptop for up to 22.5 hours of local video playback; Apple rates the MacBook Air for up to 18 hours. These are manufacturer estimates based on different test methods, not a controlled head-to-head result. They do not establish that the Surface will last longer in a typical workday, where brightness, video calls, browser tabs, workloads, and network conditions change power use. Independent Surface battery testing is not yet available.
Display and input: touch versus sharper resolution
Surface Laptop: touchscreen and conventional 16:10 workspace
The Surface has a 13-inch, 1920 × 1280 touchscreen rated at 500 nits and 60Hz. Touch input can be useful for pointing, scrolling, or interacting directly with on-screen content, especially in work settings where a mouse is not always convenient.

MacBook Air: more pixels on a slightly larger panel
The Air’s 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display is 2560 × 1664 and rated at 500 nits. It has substantially higher resolution than the Surface, which can make text and fine interface details appear sharper. Choose based on whether direct touch or a denser display matters more to your day-to-day work; brightness ratings alone do not make the panels equivalent.
Ports and peripherals: check what your desk already uses
The Surface includes USB-A alongside two USB-C ports and a headphone jack. That can simplify connections for older keyboards, mice, flash drives, or other workplace accessories.

Software, compatibility, and IT fit may decide the purchase
The Surface runs Windows 11 on Arm, while the Air runs macOS. Start with the applications and devices your job actually requires—not a general claim that one operating system is better.
Choose Surface if your work is built around Windows
- Your employer requires Windows 11 applications, policies, or management workflows.
- You rely on a specific application, plug-in, driver, or peripheral that may not work as expected on Windows on Arm.
- You want a built-in touchscreen or USB-A port.
Because independent compatibility testing for this specific Snapdragon X2 Plus Surface is not yet available, verify critical applications and device drivers with your software vendors or IT department before ordering. Windows-on-Arm compatibility should not be assumed for every specialist app or peripheral.
Choose MacBook Air if macOS fits your toolchain
- Your required applications are available for macOS and your organization supports Macs.
- You value 512GB of storage in the starting configuration and a higher-resolution display.
- Your desk is set up for USB-C or Thunderbolt, or you are comfortable using a hub for USB-A devices.
For a managed business fleet, confirm enrollment, security, support, and app deployment requirements with your organization. A laptop that fits existing IT policies and software can be a better work purchase than one that wins on a single specification.

Availability and buying advice
Microsoft unveiled the Surface Laptop (Snapdragon X2 Plus) on September 23, 2026. It is available for preorder, with retail availability scheduled for October 13, 2026, in select markets. The MacBook Air M5 has been on sale since approximately March 2026, according to TechRepublic.
If you need a laptop now, the Air is the established option of these two. If you can wait and Windows, touch, or USB-A are essential to your work, the Surface may fit better—but make the purchase decision with the understanding that independent testing is not yet available. Microsoft’s quoted gains over its previous generation and its battery rating do not substitute for a direct comparison with the Air.
