There is no single gear-oil change interval that applies to every vehicle. Check the maintenance schedule for your exact model year, drivetrain, and market—and for the specific component: a manual transmission, transfer case, or differential may each have a different requirement. Follow the schedule’s normal- or severe-use guidance and distinguish “inspect” from “replace.”
First identify which fluid and component you mean
“Gear oil” is often used loosely. A vehicle’s maintenance schedule may list manual-transmission fluid, automatic-transmission fluid, transfer-case oil, and front or rear differential oil as separate items. They are not interchangeable, and an automatic transmission may require a specified transmission fluid rather than conventional hypoid gear oil.
Use the component name printed in the owner’s manual when looking up service. Hyundai’s schedules, for example, list transmission fluid, transfer-case oil, and rear differential oil separately; Kia’s schedule also distinguishes transfer-case and differential maintenance. See the 2025 Hyundai maintenance schedule and 2025 Kia US maintenance schedule.
How to find the right interval
- Open the correct owner’s manual. Match the vehicle’s year, make, model, drivetrain, and market; schedules can differ by configuration and country.
- Find the maintenance schedule. Locate the row for the exact component, such as rear differential oil or AWD transfer-case oil.
- Check the operating-condition category. Use the manual’s normal-use schedule unless your driving meets its stated severe-use criteria; if it does, use the severe-use schedule.
- Follow the listed operation and interval. “Inspect” means check condition or level as directed; it is not the same instruction as “replace.” Note whether the manual specifies mileage, elapsed time, or both.
- Verify the fluid specification before buying or servicing. Match the required specification for that component, not just a viscosity grade.
Why a single mileage rule is misleading
Manufacturer schedules vary by component, vehicle, market, and use. These official examples illustrate that variation; none is a universal recommendation:
#1 Best Overall
- FlexFill squeezable pouch releases 2X more fluid with less effort for 3X faster filling vs. traditional bottle packaging
- Contains limited slip for optimal performance of the clutch pack, while also delivering 30% better protection against towing and heavy loads and 1.5X better gear wear protection
- Advanced full synthetic helps prevent noise and reduce chattering, while protecting gear teeth from wearing out prematurely
- High and low temperature protection ranges from -50F to 300F degrees for cold temperature fluidity and high temperature performance
- Fights rust and corrosion with corrosion inhibitors and safeguards against impurities, oxidation and thermal breakdown
| Vehicle and schedule | Component and operation | Listed interval |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 Hyundai, relevant AWD configuration, severe-use schedule | Transfer-case oil and rear differential oil: replace | Every 72,000 miles (120,000 km), according to the Hyundai schedule |
| 2025 Kia, US-market severe-use schedule | AWD transfer-case oil and rear differential oil: replace | Every 72,000 miles (117,000 km), according to the Kia schedule |
| 2025 Kia, Canada-market severe-use schedule | AWD transfer-case oil and rear differential oil | Every 117,000 km, according to the Canada-market Kia schedule |
| 2026 Hyundai, severe-use schedule | Intelligent variable transmission fluid; dual-clutch transmission fluid | 60,000 miles; 80,000 miles, respectively, in the Hyundai schedule. These are transmission-fluid examples, not a general gear-oil interval. |
Read each row in context. A severe-use replacement interval for one vehicle cannot be applied to another vehicle, or treated as equivalent to a normal-use inspection entry.
When the severe-use schedule applies
Use the definition in your own manual. Examples listed in the reviewed manufacturer schedules include repeated short trips; rough, dusty, muddy, unpaved, graveled, or salt-spread roads; heavy traffic; mountain driving; towing or camping; and frequent high-speed driving or rapid acceleration. The list is not a universal definition: apply a condition only when the relevant manual identifies it as severe use.

What if the manual says “no service required”?
Do not invent a preventive replacement interval when the manufacturer provides no such instruction. At the same time, “no service required” does not establish that fluid can never need attention. Follow the exact manual language and seek vehicle-specific manufacturer guidance if you have a concern or are unsure whether a separate inspection or repair procedure applies.

- Extreme pressure additives deliver outstanding high pressure performance, load carrying capacity and durability for towing and hauling
- Daily protection gear lubricant helps prevent noise and chattering, while protecting gear teeth from wearing out prematurely
- Exceptional high and low temperature protection ranges from -15F to 410F for dependable year-round coverage
- Fights rust and corrosion with corrosion inhibitors and safeguards against impurities, oxidation and thermal breakdown
- Meets or exceeds API Services GL-5 and non-synchronized manual transmissions calling for GL-4
Choose the fluid by specification, not by name alone
Use the specification listed for the exact vehicle and component. Viscosity by itself does not establish compatibility. For example, a 2026 Hyundai owner-manual example specifies hypoid gear oil API GL-5, SAE 75W/85 for its AWD rear differential. That specification is not a recommendation for other vehicles; only use 75W-85 GL-5 gear oil if the relevant manual calls for it.

- Confirm the manual matches your model year, market, and drivetrain.
- Look for separate entries for the transmission, transfer case, and each differential rather than searching only for “gear oil.”
- Check whether the schedule specifies inspection or replacement, and whether it has separate normal- and severe-use tables.
- If the schedule is unclear, ask a dealer or qualified service professional to confirm the component, interval, and fluid specification for your exact vehicle before service.
A surfaced Mahindra Thar owner-manual page describes lubricant-dependent intervals for manual-transmission and rear-axle applications. It is another reason to consult the exact model and market manual rather than generalizing an interval across vehicles.
