In Steam’s September 2026 Hardware & Software Survey, 32 GB was the largest system-memory group and the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 was the most common individual graphics-card model in the reported sample. Neither result means that most PC owners have 32 GB of RAM or that the RTX 5070 is the fastest or best-value GPU.
What does the latest Steam Hardware Survey say?
Valve describes the survey as a monthly collection of data about the computer hardware and software its customers use. Participation is optional and anonymous, so the results are a snapshot of participating Steam users—not a census of PC owners or a measure of gaming performance. Valve’s Steam Hardware & Software Survey identifies the September 2026 edition. The percentage figures below are reported by Hardware Busters in its October 2, 2026 coverage.

Is 32 GB of RAM now standard for gaming PCs?
Not in the sense that it is owned by most PC gamers. In the combined September survey sample, systems with 32 GB accounted for 42.22% — Hardware Busters, 2026, while 16 GB accounted for 37.82% — Hardware Busters, 2026. That makes 32 GB the leading capacity group, or plurality, but its share is below 50%.

The Windows-only figures use a different filter from the combined sample, so they should not be substituted for the combined results. These shares describe respondents’ systems; they do not establish how much memory a particular game needs or whether an upgrade would improve your PC.

What is the most popular graphics card on Steam?
The GeForce RTX 5070 was the most common individual graphics-card model in the September survey report, at 5.86% — Hardware Busters, 2026. Hardware Busters reported that its share rose from 3.56% in August, an increase of 2.30 percentage points. This is model prevalence within the reported survey sample—not a ranking of speed, value, or suitability for a particular game or resolution.
Why should month-to-month changes be read cautiously?
The composition of survey respondents shifted in September: the Simplified Chinese share rose by 7.42 percentage points to 31.39% — Hardware Busters, 2026. Hardware Busters says Valve does not cross-tabulate hardware results by language, so the effect of that sample-composition change on specific hardware figures cannot be calculated from the available reporting. It is a reason to be careful with month-to-month comparisons, not evidence that any particular group caused a hardware result or that the result is invalid.
What does the resolution data add?
Hardware Busters also reported 1920×1080 at 47.91% and 2560×1440 at 27.04%, with the latter up 5.18 percentage points. These figures provide context about the surveyed display configurations; they do not show which graphics card performs best at either resolution, or what buyers should choose.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the survey show what PC gamers should buy?
No. Adoption data can show which configurations are common among respondents, but it does not establish what you need. Before changing RAM, check compatibility with your motherboard or laptop, CPU, memory generation, and available slots. Before choosing a GPU, consider your budget, system compatibility, target games, and relevant performance testing. The survey alone supplies none of those individual buying answers.
