GRB 220706A produced X-ray flares as late as about 51 days after it was detected. Correcting that timing for the burst’s measured redshift, the authors infer that its central engine was still active at least 27.25 days after the event in the burst’s own rest frame. They report this as the latest observed central-engine activity in a gamma-ray burst (GRB), about 20.6 rest-frame days later than the previous late-flaring record, GRB 210204A.
That does not mean the initial gamma-ray flash lasted a month. The prompt emission lasted roughly a minute; the record claim concerns much later X-ray flaring and the engine activity inferred from it.
What lasted nearly a month?
GRBs are brief, intense bursts of gamma rays, followed by emission at other wavelengths as the explosion and its surroundings evolve. In GRB 220706A, the prompt gamma-ray signal and the late X-ray flares mark different phases and measure different things. The late flares are evidence the authors use to infer prolonged activity from the central engine—the compact source powering the outflow—not evidence that the prompt flash continued for weeks.
Gompertz and colleagues report their findings in a preprint submitted to arXiv on September 18, 2026. The study combines observations from Swift’s X-Ray Telescope (XRT), NICER and Chandra with optical, infrared, radio and millimeter follow-up. Its timing figures are study-specific measurements or inferences, not population-wide statistics.

How do the different duration figures compare?
| Measure | Reported value | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Prompt-emission t90 | 87 ± 18 seconds | The interval containing 90% of the prompt gamma-ray emission detected by Swift/BAT. |
| Time to late X-ray activity | About 51 days after detection, in the observer’s frame | The approximate span to the late flaring observed from Earth. |
| Last flare epoch after redshift correction | 27.25 days after trigger, in the burst’s rest frame | The authors’ inferred timing of the last flare and the basis for the central-engine activity claim. |
| Earlier late-flaring comparison | GRB 210204A; GRB 220706A is later by about 20.6 rest-frame days | The comparison behind the authors’ latest-engine-activity record claim. |
| Study-defined tburst ranking | 104.75 seconds; eighth longest among 550 analyzed GRBs | A separate duration ranking within the study’s selected sample, not the late-flare record. |
All values in the table are reported by Gompertz et al. (2026). The study defines tburst using whichever is greater: the last point in the steep-decay phase or the gamma-ray t90. The analyzed set contains GRB 220706A and 549 comparison bursts that passed the authors’ data-quality cuts. Its eighth-place ranking on that measure is therefore distinct from the claim about the latest observed flaring.
What does 27.25 days in the burst’s rest frame mean?
The burst’s host galaxy has a measured redshift of 0.8577 ± 0.0005. Because the universe expanded while the burst’s light travelled to Earth, intervals measured by an observer are stretched relative to intervals in the distant source’s frame. The authors use the redshift to correct the late-flare timing: about 51 days as observed corresponds to a last-flare epoch 27.25 days after trigger in the burst’s rest frame.

That figure is the inferred time of the last observed flare, not a direct measurement of a continuously active engine at every moment between the trigger and that flare. The conclusion is specifically that late X-ray flaring indicates the engine remained active to at least that epoch.
What made GRB 220706A keep flaring?
The observations establish unusually late X-ray activity, but they do not settle what powered it. The authors discuss three possible explanations:

- Accretion onto a black hole after a massive star’s collapse. Material from an extended star could continue falling toward the newly formed black hole and power delayed emission. The authors favor a stellar-collapse explanation by analogy with the burst’s possible supernova association, but the timing remains difficult to explain fully.
- A magnetar. A rapidly rotating, highly magnetized neutron star could supply energy after the initial explosion. The paper considers this possibility but does not identify it as a definitive explanation for all the observations.
- A tidal disruption event. A compact object disrupting a star could produce prolonged activity, though the study does not establish this as the progenitor of GRB 220706A.
No proposed mechanism in the paper cleanly accounts for every feature. The central-engine interpretation is an inference from the late flares; the engine’s identity and the detailed process that sustained them remain open questions.

Optical light emerged around 17 days after the trigger and is consistent with a supernova component. The association is plausible, but its luminosity—and whether it qualifies as a superluminous supernova—depends heavily on how much dust obscures the source. The authors’ inferred host-galaxy extinction spans 0.9–3.6 magnitudes; under some assumptions, the corrected supernova could meet superluminous thresholds. They also caution that continuing X-ray flaring may complicate the interpretation of the optical light.

The optical afterglow was unusually faint relative to the X-rays, meeting the study’s criterion for a “dark burst.” Dust in the host galaxy is a likely reason, although the authors note other possibilities. Neither the dark-burst classification nor the possible supernova establishes a single explanation for the late engine activity.
