The RISION Magic Pro is a pocket-size USB-C thermal camera that uses a compatible phone, tablet, or Windows computer for its display and power. In Robert Triggs’s week-long Android Authority review, it was easy to set up and useful for spotting heat patterns—but it did not resolve individual PCB traces or components, and aligning its thermal and visible images could be finicky.
What the RISION Magic Pro does
The Magic Pro, model AF02, is a 24 g thermal-imaging module that plugs into a supported device over USB-C. It has no separate battery; the connected device supplies power and runs the app. RISION lists Android, iOS, and Windows support, but compatibility depends on the particular device, operating system, app version, connector, and permissions. Check your exact setup before buying.

What Robert Triggs found in everyday use
In his October 5, 2026 review for Android Authority, Robert Triggs says he used the camera for a week on smartphones and other electronics and around his home. Setup involved connecting the module, opening the RISION app, and starting the camera. He found it useful for quickly comparing temperatures and locating warm areas on phones, chargers, PCs, appliances, and other electronics. Around the house, he also spotted cold areas near windows.

That makes the Magic Pro a screening and investigation aid: it can show where a surface is warmer or cooler, giving you a reason to look more closely. A thermal pattern alone does not establish what caused it or prove that a device has a fault. Triggs’s review describes useful heat-source identification, not a substitute for electrical, HVAC, or appliance diagnosis. (Android Authority review by Robert Triggs)
How much detail does the thermal image show?
RISION specifies a native sensor resolution of 256 × 192 pixels and a 512 × 384 QuadIR super-resolution output. The higher output figure is the manufacturer’s processed-resolution specification, not the sensor’s native resolution. Triggs found the native image adequate for seeing what was hot and what was not, including on small devices and enclosures, but not detailed enough to distinguish individual PCB traces or components. If you need component-level electronics inspection, the review does not establish that the Magic Pro can provide it.

The app also offers an Edge and Overlay feature that combines visible-camera detail with the thermal image. Triggs found close-up alignment sometimes finicky, particularly when his hands were unsteady. The app’s 12 color palettes and spot, line, and area measurement options offer ways to view and measure temperature patterns, but they do not add detail the sensor did not capture. RISION’s Magic Series includes a lower-resolution Magic and the Magic Pro. The specifications below are manufacturer-listed; the cited review tests the Pro, not a side-by-side comparison of both models.

RISION lists both models at 25 Hz and NETD of ≤40 mK. Those shared manufacturer specifications do not establish how the models compare in a controlled independent test. For alternatives outside the Magic Series, compare native detector resolution, close-up focus capability, measurement range and accuracy, device and connector support, app and export workflow, independent test results, warranty, and total price rather than relying on a super-resolution label alone. A thermal camera measures surface temperatures; it does not see directly through walls, glass, or water. A cold or warm patch on a wall or around a window may be worth investigating, but the image by itself cannot identify whether the cause is missing insulation, moisture, air infiltration, or a heat source behind the surface. RISION’s FAQ also addresses potential water-leak detection; a temperature pattern may be a clue, not confirmation of a leak.

RISION describes the Magic Pro for electrical-panel analysis, HVAC diagnostics, and mechanical-equipment inspection, as well as automotive and home inspection. Its launch announcement describes app functions including multiple-point, line, and area measurements, temperature waveforms, thresholds, temperature data saved in thermal photos, video capture, and PDF reports. These are manufacturer-described functions; the cited review does not independently test each workflow. For electrical panels or other safety-critical work, treat the camera as a screening tool and use a qualified professional for diagnosis or repair. Price and who should consider it
RISION’s August 3, 2026 launch announcement gave the Magic Pro a $299 MSRP and said Amazon-store availability was planned for late September 2026. The Android Authority review reported a roughly $249 Amazon-linked price, while RISION’s site displayed a lower direct price when accessed. These are dated, differing price references—not a guaranteed current price. Check the listing, stock, market, and total purchase cost before ordering. Triggs’s assessment was that the device is convenient and capable for someone who regularly needs to visualize heat, but not an impulse purchase at the stated MSRP. That distinction matters: someone who checks electronics or home temperature patterns repeatedly may value having a compact camera ready to plug in, while someone who only needs an occasional basic check may find the cost harder to justify. The review supports the former use case, but not component-level diagnosis.
