Ente Auth, 2FAS Auth and Aegis are open-source alternatives to Google Authenticator, but they suit different devices and backup preferences. Switching is a transfer of sensitive account secrets, not just an app reinstall: check that the new app can import your tokens, preserve your recovery methods, and verify codes before removing the old setup.

Which open-source authenticator should you choose?

There is no universal “most secure” choice in the available evidence. Start with your phone platform, then compare how each app handles sync, backups, export and account requirements.

App Platform and Google Authenticator import Sync, backups and offline use Export and browser support
Ente Auth Mobile, desktop and web apps. Its import documentation lists Google Authenticator as a supported source, though Ente notes that the list may be out of sync. Ente Auth · Import and export documentation Ente describes end-to-end encrypted cloud backups and sync. It also advertises offline use without an account. Ente Auth Ente says users can import and export data. A browser extension is not established in the cited product information. Ente Auth
2FAS Auth Mobile authenticator with a browser extension that pairs with the phone app. The cited product page does not establish Google Authenticator import details. 2FAS Auth 2FAS describes free offline operation and synchronization through export files, iCloud or Google Drive. The storage route you choose matters to your backup and privacy decisions. 2FAS Auth Supports export-file synchronization and offers a mobile-connected browser extension. 2FAS Auth
Aegis Authenticator Android only; the project describes compatibility with Google Authenticator. It is not a fit if you need an iOS app. Aegis Authenticator Uses an encrypted vault with AES-256-GCM and password or biometric unlock. The project describes user-chosen automatic backups. Aegis Authenticator Offers plaintext or encrypted export. Protect plaintext exports carefully and delete temporary copies after confirming the transfer. Aegis Authenticator

Choose Ente Auth for cross-platform access and encrypted sync

Ente is the clearest fit among these options if you want the same authenticator across mobile, desktop and web, with end-to-end encrypted cloud sync. Its documentation lists Google Authenticator among import sources; check the current import instructions before beginning because Ente warns that its source list can be out of date.

Choose 2FAS if browser integration is a priority

2FAS pairs its browser extension with the mobile app and offers several synchronization routes, including export files and iCloud or Google Drive. Decide which route you intend to use and secure any exported file as carefully as the codes themselves.

Choose Aegis for an Android vault

Aegis is an Android-focused option with an encrypted vault and export choices. Its Android-only availability rules it out for someone who needs to use an authenticator app on iPhone.

What “open source” does—and does not—tell you about security

Open-source code can be inspected, but that label alone does not establish that a particular app’s backup or sync mechanism is safe. A 2023 USENIX Security Symposium study examined backup mechanisms in specific historical app versions and reported serious implementation or cryptographic-use flaws in some mechanisms it tested. Its findings are not a current ranking of Ente, 2FAS or Aegis, and should not be treated as one. USENIX Security Symposium study

The study’s sample illustrates why backup design deserves attention, but its counts are not market-wide rates or current product statistics. Across the apps sampled, the authors recorded 7 QR-code mechanisms, 3 cloud-sync entries, 9 plaintext file-export entries, 5 encrypted file-export entries, 6 plaintext sharing entries, 7 encrypted sharing entries, 4 apps with Android backup and 9 apps with no backup mechanism in the categories used. The study table also reported 181.5M+ total installs across its sampled apps; that historical total is not a current install count for any one app. USENIX Security Symposium study

For your own choice, assess the specific backup route, who can access it, whether it is encrypted, how you recover access if you lose a device, and whether you can protect the vault and recovery material. Product descriptions are useful for understanding stated features; they are not independent security audits.

How to transfer Google Authenticator codes safely

Before changing apps, identify the accounts that rely on authenticator codes and confirm each service’s recovery method. Then follow the current instructions for Google Authenticator’s export and the destination app’s import. The 2FAuth migration guide describes Google Authenticator exporting tokens as QR codes; exports of more than ten entries may produce several QR codes in batches. Import support and exact steps vary by destination app. 2FAuth migration guide

  1. Prepare recovery access. For each account, locate its recovery codes or other recovery method and follow that service’s instructions. Do not rely on the authenticator transfer as your only way back into an account.
  2. Check the destination app first. Confirm that it supports importing from Google Authenticator and review its current import steps. If it does not support a direct import, use the account provider’s own process to set up a new authenticator rather than assuming the apps share a universal transfer format.
  3. Export from Google Authenticator. Use its current export flow and scan the generated QR code or codes into the destination app as instructed. When an export displays account secrets, treat it like a password: do not screenshot it, upload it to photo backup, or send it through email or chat.
  4. Validate the new entries. Keep the old app in place while you test codes from the new one against the corresponding services. If a code fails, use that service’s recovery or re-enrollment instructions; do not delete the old entry as a troubleshooting shortcut.
  5. Remove temporary transfer material. After confirming the new entries, delete temporary files or copies of export material. If you used a plaintext export, protect it from anyone with access to the device or storage until it is removed.
  6. Retire the old setup only after confirmation. Once the new codes work and recovery access is accounted for, follow the relevant services’ instructions for removing or replacing the old authenticator enrollment.

Can you use an authenticator on more than one device?

That depends on the app and the sync or backup feature you choose. Ente describes sync across mobile, desktop and web; 2FAS describes synchronization through export files, iCloud or Google Drive; Aegis describes encrypted vault storage and user-chosen automatic backups on Android. These approaches are not interchangeable: check the app’s current documentation for which devices and recovery steps your chosen setup supports.
