PCWorld reported the discount on October 5, and WIRED listed the same price at Amazon, B&H Photo, and Sony the next day. Those are dated reports, not a guarantee the price or stock is still available, so check the retailer’s live listing before buying.
What the reported $198 deal includes
The deal is for the Sony WH-1000XM5 specifically—not an unspecified pair of Sony headphones. PCWorld described it as 50% off ahead of October Prime Day, listing $198 against a $400 reference price. WIRED’s October 6 roundup also listed the WH-1000XM5 at $198 from Amazon, B&H Photo, and Sony. Neither report establishes that every retailer still has the same price or inventory.

How it fits against newer Sony models
WIRED describes the WH-1000XM5 as largely replaced by the WH-1000XM6 and WH-1000XM4C. That gives the XM5 previous-generation context, but does not establish which model is best for a particular buyer. If you are choosing among them, compare current prices and the features you specifically want; the cited deal reports do not offer a controlled, feature-by-feature comparison.
Should you buy it at $198?
The reported price makes the WH-1000XM5 worth considering if you want this previous-generation Sony noise-canceling model and the retailer still has it at that price. Before checkout, confirm the model name, final price, and stock on the listing itself. The October 5–6 reports do not establish a lowest-ever price or guarantee that the deal remains live.
