China’s gaming market is large and growing, giving international studios a strong commercial reason to consider Chinese players. But the available figures do not prove that foreign studios have suddenly shifted strategy as a group: they measure China’s overall market and Chinese games’ overseas sales, not foreign-developed games’ China revenue or a wave of studio announcements.
How big is China’s gaming market?
China’s domestic games market generated RMB 325.783 billion in 2024, up 7.53% year over year, according to the China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association. The association reported 674 million users, up 0.94%, a record at that time (China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association).
More recent figures cover only the first half of 2025: domestic market income reached RMB 168 billion, up 14.08% year over year, while the reported user count was 679 million, up 0.72%. The Shanghai Municipal Government published these figures, citing the half-year China Game Industry Report (Shanghai Municipal Government).
Revenue growth outpaced user growth in both reported comparisons. That is consistent with a market becoming more valuable overall, but it does not establish that each player spent more. The periods, releases, prices, and market mix can all affect the totals.

Which platforms matter to studios?
Mobile was the largest platform segment in the association’s 2024 data, but the market is not mobile-only. The same report recorded revenue across mobile, client, and console games (China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association).
| Platform segment | 2024 revenue |
|---|---|
| Mobile games | RMB 238.217 billion |
| Client games | RMB 67.981 billion |
| Console games | RMB 4.488 billion |
The report separately gives revenue for esports games, a category that can overlap with platform categories. These figures should not be added together as if every category were exclusive. The association also cited multi-platform releases as one contributor to client-game performance. For a studio, the useful question is whether its own genre and platform fit the audience—not whether every title should be rebuilt as a mobile game.

Why the market is commercially attractive
A large audience and continued activity
The 2024 totals and first-half 2025 figures indicate a substantial audience and ongoing market activity. The association attributed 2024 growth to several factors, including new releases, hit games, established long-running titles, mini-games, and wider multi-platform and cloud-game availability (China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association). That mix matters: market performance does not hinge on one genre or a single type of player.
Chinese games are also competing overseas
Chinese self-developed games generated US$18.557 billion in overseas sales in 2024, up 13.39%, according to the China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association and the National Press and Publication Administration’s report summary. The United States, Japan, and South Korea were among the leading destinations for Chinese mobile-game exports (China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association).

This is evidence of two-way global competition: Chinese companies are reaching players abroad while China remains a major domestic market. It does not show that Chinese companies’ expansion caused foreign studios to target China, or reveal what any particular foreign publisher plans to do there.
Does “suddenly obsessed” describe a proven industry shift?
Not on the evidence available here. The cited sources establish China’s market size, growth, and platform mix, but they do not document a representative wave of foreign-studio announcements, quantify foreign-developed games’ China revenue, or show that foreign studios’ interest has suddenly increased. The market’s scale explains why studios might evaluate China; it cannot, by itself, prove that they have all changed strategy.

To establish a specific studio’s intentions or results, look for its own statements, company filings, regional revenue disclosures, localization announcements, or launch outcomes. Those are different kinds of evidence from national market totals.

Localization and ongoing operations
Market size does not mean a title can launch unchanged. The National Press and Publication Administration’s summary of the 2024 export report identifies cultural differences and laws, regulations, and policy limits among challenges for companies operating internationally. It also says community platforms have become important to game-export operations (National Press and Publication Administration report summary).

For a foreign studio, that makes language quality, cultural review, player support, community operations, and publishing arrangements sensible issues to investigate. The cited material does not establish a universal route to market, a single platform that reaches all Chinese players, or a guaranteed return from any localization or community strategy.
Imported-game approvals
Regulatory access is a separate consideration from player demand. The Associated Press reported that 98 imported game version numbers were issued among 1,075 total game version numbers in 2023 (Associated Press). That is a historical count, not a current quota or a guide to today’s approval process; studios need current regulator information before making launch plans.
How to assess China exposure for a game
A studio or investor weighing the opportunity can compare the following factors rather than treating market size as a forecast of success:
Quick Recap
- Audience and revenue potential: Consider total market scale alongside the growth of the segment relevant to the game.
- Platform and genre fit: Assess mobile, client/PC, and console separately, then evaluate whether the game’s genre suits the intended audience.
- Localization and community workload: Account for language, cultural adaptation, player support, and community operations without assuming a single approach works for every title.
- Market access and policy exposure: Check current approval and publishing requirements for imported games instead of relying on historical counts.
- Evidence quality: Keep China’s domestic-market totals separate from foreign-game revenue in China, and Chinese games’ overseas sales separate from foreign studios’ China results.
