Measure AI search in three layers: whether your brand appears, whether that visibility brings useful visits, and whether those visits or related awareness contribute to business outcomes. No single score captures all three. The seven metrics below form a practical scorecard, not an official Google ranking or measurement standard.
1. Generative AI impressions: Are your pages appearing?
Start with Google Search Console’s dedicated Generative AI performance report. It reports impressions for eligible pages in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode; use its page, country, device, and date views to see where exposure is occurring. Google announced the reports on June 3, 2026, and said rollout to all websites worldwide was complete by August 31, 2026. An impression is exposure, not proof that a user noticed, read, trusted, or acted on an answer. The report does not include Search Labs experiments. Its newest data may be preliminary, and ordinary Search Console row and time-period limits apply. Results also differ depending on whether you view the property or filter to a page: Google notes that aggregation can cause chart and table discrepancies. 2. AI answer mention and citation rate: Are you present in answers?
For platforms beyond Google’s first-party report—or to capture whether an answer names your brand or cites your site—use a documented prompt-sampling process. This is an operational metric you define, not a universal Google measurement.

- Choose a fixed set of customer prompts that reflects your audience and intent.
- Record the platform, language, geography, and date for each observation.
- Count brand mentions separately from citations to owned pages.
- Report the numerator and denominator, such as 12 mentions in 40 observed answers, alongside the prompt set and observation window.
Keep vendor visibility scores in their proper context: they are outputs of a tool’s sampling and scoring method, not privileged access to Google’s systems. Google cautions, “No third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems.” Google’s guidance on AI features and site eligibility
3. Share of voice: How does your presence compare?
Share of voice puts observed presence in competitive context. Compare your brand with named competitors across the same prompts or queries, platforms, geography, and dates. State how you define presence and calculate the denominator; different sampling methods can produce different shares, so the result is meaningful only with its method attached.
Eligible retailers have a more specific first-party option in Merchant Center’s AI performance insights. For related conversational shopping queries, the report defines brand share of voice using a brand’s AI impressions divided by total impressions across the brand and defined competitors. This report has a limited scope: it is available to eligible English-language Merchant Center accounts in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, and the United States; it covers organic AI traffic, such as free listings, and excludes paid Ads traffic. Its shopping-intent stages are discovery, evaluation, and ready to buy. Separate stages when comparing performance, since a brand’s visibility may differ between early research and purchase-ready queries.

Use your analytics platform to identify sessions referred from AI answer services when referrer or campaign data makes the source distinguishable. Google recommends analytics tools such as Google Analytics for measures including conversions and time on site. Google’s AI features guidance
Do not treat this as a count of every visit influenced by AI. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in Search Console’s overall Web search data, while its dedicated generative AI report focuses on impressions. A user may encounter a brand in an AI answer and later arrive through another channel, or a referral may not expose a clear AI referrer. Search Console’s AI impression report and analytics referral sessions therefore answer different questions; neither alone captures all influence.

5. Engagement quality: Are those visits useful?
Evaluate AI-referred landing sessions using a consistent definition in your analytics setup: for example, engaged sessions, meaningful page depth, or time on site. Compare with similar landing pages or channels, rather than judging the traffic against an unrelated site-wide average. Record the definition and comparison window so the metric stays interpretable as analytics configuration changes.
Google has described its own “quality clicks” as clicks where users do not quickly click back. That is a qualitative description of Google’s aggregate analysis, not a standard analytics measure or a guarantee about an individual site’s AI-referred sessions. 6. Conversions or qualified leads: Does AI-referred traffic contribute?
Connect measurable AI-referred sessions to the outcomes that matter to your business: purchases, qualified leads, signups, demo requests, or another defined event. Report both conversion volume and conversion rate, and disclose the attribution window and model used. Without those details, a conversion count cannot show how the credit was assigned.

Google recommends using analytics to track conversions, but the cited guidance does not establish one universal attribution model for AI search. Treat conversions tied to identifiable AI referrals as measurable attributed outcomes, not a complete accounting of AI’s influence.

Track branded query impressions and clicks over time in Search Console’s standard performance reporting, segmenting by geography and period where useful. Search Console provides query and page dimensions, with privacy filtering and other data limits. Branded demand is a supporting awareness signal, not proof that AI answers caused a change. Campaigns, news, seasonality, and other channels can also affect branded searches.

How to compare AI search performance fairly
When comparing brands, tools, or periods, keep the measurement frame consistent. At minimum, document:
- Surface or platform, plus geography and language.
- Prompt or query set and the observation or reporting window.
- Eligible population and denominator for rates or share calculations.
- Whether you count an unaided brand mention, an owned-page citation, or both.
- Downstream visits, engagement, and conversion definitions, if measured.
For shopping analysis, distinguish discovery, evaluation, and ready-to-buy intent, and account for the Merchant Center report’s product-category and country filters. Its current traffic scope is organic AI traffic, not paid Ads traffic. Merchant Center report scope
How to interpret Google’s AI search metrics
Google says its generative AI Search features rely on core Search systems. Pages need to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet; keep pages crawlable and technically clear, and publish helpful, reliable content. In standard Search Console reporting, Google counts an external-link click from AI Overviews or AI Mode as a click, and standard impression rules apply. An AI Overview occupies one position, with all links in that overview assigned the same position. As a result, average position is not an independent conventional ranking for every cited link.
