Turn off Show App in Search too if you also want the app itself hidden from results. Apple says either setting prevents Siri AI from finding personal context from that app. These controls limit Search visibility; they do not promise to erase the app’s data from your iPhone or change the app’s own search.
How do I stop Siri from showing messages or other app content in Search?
- Open Settings > Search. On some iOS versions, the menu labels or location may differ.
- Tap the app whose content you want to exclude.
- Turn off Show Content in Search. This is the targeted choice when you want the app installed but do not want its supported content to appear in iPhone Search.
- If you also want the app icon or app name excluded from Search results, turn off Show App in Search.
Apple states that turning off either Show App in Search or Show Content in Search prevents Siri AI from finding personal context from that app. See Apple’s Spotlight Search instructions.
This changes what appears through iPhone Search; it is not a general deletion or app-data control. It also does not change search inside the app itself. Third-party content appears in Spotlight only when the app supports Spotlight indexing, so not every app exposes its content in the same way. Apple describes the range of material Spotlight can index—including documents, email, text messages, contacts, photos, music, podcasts, notes, and system settings—in its Spotlight indexing overview.
Can I stop Siri from learning from an app?
Yes. Siri’s per-app learning and suggestion controls are separate from the Search visibility switches. Open Settings > Siri or Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Apps > [app], depending on your iOS version, then turn off the applicable options. Apple says Siri Suggestions are on by default for apps and documents per-app controls in its Siri Suggestions guide.

Look at what each switch controls: one may stop Siri from learning from an app, while others determine where that app’s suggestions appear. Available options vary by app and software version. Disabling learning or suggestion surfaces is not a substitute for turning off Show Content in Search when the specific goal is to exclude app content from Search.
How do I turn off location-based Search suggestions?
Location-based suggestions use a separate system setting. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services and turn off Suggestions & Search. This controls suggestions tied to location; it does not replace the per-app Search visibility settings. Apple describes the location-services controls in its privacy and Location Services guide.

What if I want Siri unavailable altogether?
You can turn Siri off in Siri settings, but this is broader than excluding one app and reduces Siri functionality. The exact controls and labels depend on your iOS and Siri version; consult Apple’s instructions for turning on and activating Siri for the version that applies to your device.
If your concern is Siri personalization across Apple devices, Apple says it can update across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Its iPhone guidance says to disable Siri in iCloud settings if you do not want that personalization to update across devices. That is a different choice from excluding a single app in Search.

Do these settings control an app’s access to contacts, photos, or the microphone?
No. Review those permissions separately under Settings > Privacy & Security. This area includes controls for protected data and features such as contacts, calendars, reminders, photos, microphone, speech recognition, and location. A permission governs an app’s access to that type of data; Search visibility governs whether supported app content can appear in iPhone Search. Changing one does not stand in for the other.
